Bogus Cookie Recipe Story Meme

Addict: The story goes something like this (and you can read the entire email at the end of this post)…

Ocean Elf: I'll put that on another link for a mangling.

Addict: My daughter and I went to Woolworths blah blah blah we enjoyed the cokkies blah blah blah we asked for the resipe blah blah blah they gave it to us blah blah blah but they charged us a fortune blah blah blah so here it is for free blah blah blah.

Cute story and everyone is forwarding it as though it was Gospel, only problem is the same email has been doing the rounds for about 50 years! The most popular was the Nieman Marcus Cookie Email of a few years ago that has now reproduced itself in the Woolworths version.

Ocean Elf: And when you find out that the story is a mean-spirited lie about a company, with the troll who started it actually admitting to wanting them out of business, it's anything but cute.

Addict: The Woolworths Email… My daughter and I had just finished lunch at a Woolies Cafe in Hyde Park, Johannesburg. Because both of us are such biscuit lovers, we decided to try the ‘Woolies Cookie’. It was so excellent that I asked if they would give me the recipe. The waitress said with a small frown, ‘I’m afraid not, but you can buy the recipe.’

The Nieman Marcus Email… My daughter and I had just finished a salad at Neiman-Marcus Cafe in Dallas & decided to have a small dessert. Because both of us are such cookie lovers, we decided to try the “Neiman-Marcus Cookie”. It was so excellent that I asked if they would give me the recipe and the waitress said with a small frown “I’m afraid not.” Well” I said, “would you let me buy the recipe?”

Now all you conspiracy theorists (like Mr ‘man never landed on the moon’ Hasslefree) are probably thinking what a coincidence that the same thing should happen again?!?!? I say check the fact on the internet before you send out the drivel.

Ocean Elf: Hahaha! Here, here!

Addict: Ah the power of email and the new social media. I wonder how many people rushed home to bake 112 cookies in an attempt to put Woolworths out of business, hmmm maybe I should start baking?

Ocean Elf: Nah, someone already has. I sampled a cookie. It wasn't all that great.

Here's an article from someone who did a compare/contrast experiment on the real Neiman-Marcus VS. chain letter hoax cookies.
