Jennifer's Furby

🤥CP: Jennifer's Furby.

When I was little, oh, I’d say about eight or so, I badly wanted a Furby. My parents tried and tried to get their hands on one so I would be greeted by the talkative toy under the Christmas tree, but at the time, they were so popular, getting one at all would’ve been quite the feat. Of course, like many other parents in the release year of Furbies, they had no luck of getting one for me. I was a little disappointed that Christmas, but even though I was just a kid, I was aware of supply and demand.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Well, this must be about the 1998 furby model, since that was the big release year. Furbies came back again in subsequent years, but strangely enough, were not quite so popular, although I think they were much improved over that first model, especially where voice was concerned.

🤥CP: During Christmas break, a couple of my friends came over and I was envious of both of them. They both had Furbies. I frowned some as I watched the two other girls laugh as their Furbies communicated and played together.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: One can't blame a kid for being a kid. I would hardly have reacted much differently at that age if I saw my friends both had something I really wanted. Perfectly understandable.

🤥CP: Jessica got a spotted gray one with a white stomach and a pink mohawk.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: There is no such furby with this pattern among the 1998 lot. I checked.

Hmm, Funny you should mention the name Jessica.

🤥CP: Amanda’s was a pure white one with blue eyes, just like I wanted.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: That is a color I would want too.

🤥CP: I pouted, but did my best to be happy for them. After a while, they went back home. My parents clearly could tell how upset I was.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Parents can tell those kinds of things about their own kids you know.

🤥CP: January came and went, and even for my birthday, there was no Furby to be found. I did the usual. I pouted and sulked like the little brat I was and settled for brushing the manes and tails of the My Little Pony dolls I had.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: *Grimace* eww! Figured MLP would be brought up in here somewhere.

🤥CP: I would watch cartoons and fussily flip the channel every time a Furby commercial came on.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Understandable.

🤥CP: Eventually my mom got a phone call and ended up crying her eyes out like something awful had happened.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: oh, swell. Something like that is always bound to happen.

🤥CP: Of course, curious and bored with my dolls, I got up to see what was wrong.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Notice that alarm, distress and compassion at seeing your mom upset never enters the picture.

🤥CP: “Mommy? What happened?”

She hugged me tight. “Your cousin Jennifer…” She began stammering, only to sob loudly.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Oh, ruddy hex, not again.

🤥CP: Jennifer was much older than me. She was sixteen at the time.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: So she was 16 in 1998, and you were 8. Nice to know…

🤥CP: “She won’t be there when we go see Aunt Becky.”

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: let me guess. Jennifer killed herself. and she had a black furby that got passed on to you and it turned evil. Bleh. I might suggest this could be the same Becky who offed her husband, but considering her involvement in a different story where she was younger, that wouldn't quite work. She could be the Wolf Story Becky, all grown up, though.

🤥CP: “Why?”

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Oh, brother. Drag drag drag.

🤥CP: “She’s in heaven, now, sweetie.”

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Bang on again. *Gets gold star off shelf to add to collection*

🤥CP: I knew what that meant.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: By age 8, I would hope so. Though it isn't necessary for an 8 year old to know how it happened.

🤥CP: I didn’t know Jennifer so well, but when I did see her, she was always very nice to me, even though I didn’t like the music she listened to very much. The men always seemed angry or sad.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: fair enough. Understandable.

🤥CP: My tastes changed as I got older.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Of course. That's human nature. You like more or different things when time goes on. In addition to or instead of what you liked in the past.

🤥CP: Simply put, she was really depressed and always wore black.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Okay, I get it. She was emo. But even they pretty much need to be nice around little kids.

🤥CP: I didn’t know at the time but she was what older people referred to as “goth”.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Okay, emo and goth, then. Two kinds of creepy in one. Or maybe one and the same, I'm not exactly sure. Not into it and never will be.

🤥CP: I just knew that my aunt would be very upset. This just meant we had to go see her.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Duh.

🤥CP: Becky was very distraught when we showed up.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: DUH! I didn't think she would be throwing a party.

🤥CP: My mom didn’t think I should come along, but I begged and pleaded, hoping I could find a way to cheer my aunt up.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Huh? First you guys show up and then you beg to go along? Typical pasta timing muck-ups.

🤥CP: It would be strange without Jennifer there, but my mother decided that attending her funeral may be a good way to learn about coping with death.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Okay, if you had been a bit more specific with that before now, - well, put it this way. You don't go along to a funeral to try cheering people up. I don't believe that's your motivation anyway. and no, I don't want to hear all about the funeral so kindly skip it.

🤥CP: The funeral was open-casket.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Bleh, I said I didn't want to know.

🤥CP: Jennifer looked almost like she was just peacefully sleeping.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Duh. If she looked any different, they would've had a closed casket. Can we leave now?

🤥CP: I cried,

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: I - don't - want - to - hear - about - it.

🤥CP: simply because I knew she wouldn’t wake up.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: No duh! That's why it is called death and not sleep. It's also why we cry when people die. Hardly worth noting. Let's get out of here already.

🤥CP: She wouldn’t play patty cake with me anymore,

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Wait, weren't you 8 years old? and you're still playing patty cake? I mean, there's nothing wrong with that, but, really? And duh I know she won't play anything with you. no patty cakes, no my little ponies, no nothings. So move along. I don't need to get hit over the head with a glurge to get the point that Jennifer's dead and you're sad.

🤥CP: she wouldn’t tell me scary stories, and she wouldn’t tell me cool things about spiders anymore…

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Look, I get it already. I get it. She's dead. You're sad. You're sad about it for like thousands of little reasons. Move on.

🤥CP: As the casket was finally lowered into the ground,

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Oh, for gosh sakes, skip it!

🤥CP: I quietly murmured, “Good night, Jenny.”

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: *Hurls*

🤥CP: After the funeral,

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Oh, good, it's over!

🤥CP: I went into her room. The empty pill bottle (there was no label, so I don’t know what it was) was still on the floor. I didn’t know what it meant at the time, but my mom and her sister were discussing what was found during the autopsy, and she overdosed on Valium and consumed alcohol, which killed her.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Figured it was suicide. Bang on again.

🤥CP: A few things were already taken out of her room. Her journal contained entries about how she wanted to die and how she hated herself. Nobody ever knew she felt that way.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Unfortunately that's why people are successful at suicide, because nobody else really knows what goes on in another person's head and can't do anything about something if unaware of it until it's too late. tough row to hoe, but it happens all the time.

🤥CP: I especially didn’t.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: I hope not. You were only 8, remember? You couldn't have fixed her anyway.

🤥CP: It made me sad.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Covered, covered, covered, and covered. I get it. You're sad over Jennifer. I get it I get it. You don't need to say you're sad a million times over.

🤥CP: She always seemed so happy when I’d visit.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Well duh, of course. You were a kid. What else could she do?

🤥CP: I heard both Becky and my mother weeping.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: *Scowl&headdesk* Well I didn't think you would be hearing them doing the happy dance! Move on!

🤥CP: They came into Jennifer’s room and glanced around. Becky insisted that all of her posters needed to be taken down and whatnot. She wanted to clear the room of all of her old things. My mother explained to me later that sometimes when someone dies, the people who love them don’t want to see what that person had because it would upset them.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: which is understandable. People can also go the other way and want to surround themselves with stuff from whoever they lost. It can go either way, for the same basic reason.

🤥CP: I just thought Becky REALLY hated Marilyn Manson and Nirvana.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: She could have. I don't like them either, so understand why anyone else wouldn't.

🤥CP: After a while, I ended up collecting a pile of things that Becky wanted to throw out.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Cue epic music, the furby is about to make an entrance.

🤥CP: I had a stack of CDs full of music that terrified most kids my age and a few posters that went with them.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Heck, that kind of music terrifies me too and I'm not a kid. But this definitely sounds like this was set during the 90s.

🤥CP: Becky fussed at me, wondering why I wanted such “scary things”. My answer was simple.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Bleh. You were 8, so of course you're not going to give the speech of the century and have it based on profound adult thought processes.

🤥CP: “Jenny liked them, and I liked Jenny, so I like them, too.”

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: *Snore*

🤥CP: My mother just shook her head, looking at Becky. She was basically telling her not to even try it, she knew how stubborn I was.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: I'll bet.

🤥CP: But after collecting that stack of things, I stared at the bookshelf across the room.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Okay, now the furby makes his grand entrance.

🤥CP: I saw a Furby there. It might not have been the color I wanted, but it was still a Furby. It was pure black, but I would expect something like that from Jenny.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Yep, this is the 1999 black furby model. I think its official name/description was "Witch's Cat" but am not absolutely positive. It's just a reference I found during an internet search.

But why on earth would Jennifer even get a furby in the first place? regardless of its color, I just can't picture someone like her doing anything but sneer at the idea of keeping a furby. She might've hated herself, but she'd still be too proud or too cool to have any association with toys.

🤥CP: “Aunt Becky, can I have the Furby, too?”

She only nodded, biting her lip to fight off some tears. She took it from the shelf and handed it to me.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: This whole thing could've been summarized as "Cousin Jenny died and among some of the things my aunt said I could have of hers was a black furby."

🤥CP: It was a long ride back home, but I was playing with Jenny’s old Furby, so I felt fine. It was sitting neatly on top of the manual. Speaking its silly language, I would respond to it in English. My mother seemed relieved that she didn’t have to buy me one, but at the same time, distraught by my cousin’s death. She talked to Becky a lot after that.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: So, during the ride home, I guess you weren't allowed to play with the furby much? It would have annoyed the heck out of your parents, being stuck in the car with something jabbering Furbish in a weird voice. So, if they limited the time the furby was powered up during the trip, I can see why it would've been a long ride home for you. and obviously to the rest of it, I didn't think either your aunt or your mom would go back to happy joy normal right away, you know. no need to go on about how sad they still were.

🤥CP: I would often read to the Furby and I started listening to the music that Jennifer left behind. My friends didn’t like it, so I didn’t play it when they were around.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Yeah okay.

🤥CP: They brought their Furbies over to meet mine, only to be shocked by what happened.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: *Rolling eyes* Let me guess, Jen's furby said some bad things and tried to start a fight.

🤥CP: The Furby’s green eyes stared blankly to the blue eyes of Amanda’s white one.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Always with the staring eyes bit. So your black furby is jealous of the white one you wanted instead? Rubbish.

🤥CP: Its mechanical voice uttered something that startled us. “Me no like you!”

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: *Rolling eyes* It's not "Me no like you" it's "Me no like". Furby Boom even says that. And they can utter that any time.

🤥CP: Amanda looked a little unnerved and scooped her Furby up into her arms and gave me a strange look. “I didn’t teach it that, I swear!” I told them how I got it and Jessica, the most superstitious of us, said it was probably haunted or cursed.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Somehow I just knew someone in this story would come up with that sort of conclusion. Bleh. But this Jessica is only a kid, after all.

🤥CP: I told her not to be silly. We tried to make it interact with hers, but my Furby only closed its eyes and fell asleep, despite the other’s friendly attempts to sing and whatnot.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: I have a furby that did that when other furbies arrived. He wasn't being unfriendly. He was very shy and disconcerted. He got over it and now hangs out with the rowdies.

🤥CP: I sighed and shook my head. “I guess I need to reset it or something.” The other girls nodded. Taking a pen, I pressed the button on the underside of it.

After it opened its eyes, it said something that I didn’t think was normal.

“Me so cold.”

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: If you jiggle them when they're speaking, sometimes different words get mixed together.

🤥CP: I stared into the green eyes. They reminded me of Jennifer’s.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: *Rolling eyes* Of course, she had to have the same color eyes as the furby. Man this is cheesy.

🤥CP: That night, my friends and I had a sleepover. We all had our Furbies, but mine decided to be antisocial and sleep the whole time. We watched movies and talked about things that normal little girls would talk about. We laughed and told scary stories and even picked on Amanda for having a crush on this boy named Kevin. They picked on me for one boy that I REALLY didn’t like, but it was obvious he liked me. I just made gagging motions, resulting in laughter.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: 8 year olds and you are already crushing on boys?

🤥CP: After we slept, we had breakfast together and they went home.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Okay. Sure.

🤥CP: Afterwards, my Furby woke up. I tried to feed it by depressing its tongue.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Let me guess. It got sick or something.

🤥CP: “Me no hungry.”

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Sometimes that happens.

🤥CP: I frowned.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: I yawned.

🤥CP: I rubbed its back to mimic petting. It responded with “boo”, which meant no. I was annoyed again.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: If this was a Furby Boom I'd guess that it was in the offish attitude. But it's just a weird furby.

🤥CP: I prodded its belly in attempt to tickle it. It let out a sound that sounded like a bored sigh. This was also irritating.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: So just keep playing with it and it'll eventually smarten up.

🤥CP: “No play.”

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Then shut up and go back to sleep.

🤥CP: I didn’t expect this at all. This wasn’t how my friends’ Furbies acted. It just sat there with its eyes wide open, staring and doing nothing aside from the occasional yawn or sigh.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Well you can always shut its eyes manually. I have a furby baby who closes her eyes when entering speep and power-off mode. I can open her eyes when she is not activated, and they stay open.

🤥CP: When talking to my mother about it, she explained that’s how Jennifer acted towards Becky during her last days.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: That has nothing to do with the furby. The thing is not Jennifer…

🤥CP: It went to sleep after a while. The next day, I woke it up and it responded, “Let me sleep.”

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: So it's lazy.

🤥CP: It fell asleep, as usual, but this time, it opened its eyes after it fell asleep, though judging by its silence it wasn’t awake. I told my mom, because it started to creep me out, and she gave me a strange look.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Something's probably a little screwy with the mechanisms. oh well, close its eyes manually then.

🤥CP: “What’s wrong, mama?”

🤥CP: Let me sleep. “Those were Jennifer’s last words.”

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: So freaking what? look, the furby is not Jennifer, nor did it record/understand whatever she might have said. This story is so cheesy and contrived it's just ridiculous.

🤥CP: After that, we removed the batteries from the Furby.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Might as well since it's a dud. Probably broken inside by some raging fit Jennifer had at some time.

🤥CP: When I was looking around for it to sell on eBay due to the collectors out there, I couldn’t find it.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: of course you can. There are still green-eyed black 1998 furbies (Witch's Cat) being sold on eBay, and they're easier to come by than Funky Furby 2006.

Snowball, the white one with blue eyes is also available.

The one that isn't, due to nonexistence is the spotted gray with white tummy and pink mohawk.

🤥CP: Good riddance, I say.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: *Rolling eyes* Wuss.

🤥CP: To this day, the thought of its open, lifeless green eyes still disturbs me.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: *Sneer* Oh, please. Grow a backbone. It's just a toy, nothing more.

🤥CP: It witnessed my cousin’s death,

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: no it did not. To "witness" something, you have to be alive. The furby might've been present, as in, been in the same room when it happened, but didn't "witness" anything. It didn't even record it on camera.

🤥CP: and sometimes, I wonder if her soul is trapped inside.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: *Rolling eyes* sheesh, just shut it, you annoying little brat. No, furbies do not trap souls. No, that furby is not Jennifer. *Nock nock* Anybody home? Are you getting this at all?

🤥CP: She had a disturbed side that I never knew,

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: of course you never knew. She was a messed up teen, you were 8, you weren't supposed to know all the ins and outs of her life. We've been through all that already.

🤥CP: and all of the bad in her could’ve been implanted in the toy that rested so innocently on her book shelf.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: BULL CRAP! Furbies do not trap bad souls. Period! Go back to playing patty cake and gossiping with your friends about your crushes.

Cool I have a pure white furby with a black dot on its head. Sometimes it will just stare at me and say " I'm sorry for this, good bye". After that it dies so I reset it. It seems kinda mad when I do that but gets over it in a few days. After about three days after that it repeats the cycle. Creepy. I hate when it dies because I love that furby. He was my childhood friend. Every time I feed it it throws up to. I'm really worried about it. :( I'm worried I will wake up one morning and it will be dead and won't wake back up... :_(

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: There's always Ebay.

I don't remember my own 1998 furby ever saying "I'm sorry for this" mind you, I never left the batteries in until they were completely run down either… My 1999 furby baby wants to sleep a lot, but she's a baby. Naturally. Duh.

⭕June 6 by Quilava The Killer

Great story. I've always been freaked out by furbies, it's just the eyes and the voice and how they act living *shudders* Again, well done. Tenouttaten.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Bleckh. Typical dumb pasta "Furby is creepy" thing and you're hardly unique being creeped out by furbies. Join the mass of sissies out there. And "Killer" really? *Rolling eyes*

⭕May 25 by Shinigami.Eyes

I'm actually surprised anyone decided this was good enough to be nominated for PotM. I'm glad to know my stories are still getting some attention.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: *Rolling eyes* I nominate it for the trash bin, but really, you're glad your stories are getting some attention - awww, ain't that just so terribly precious?… *Sneer*

⭕May 21 by WolfSoldier12

I don't exactly like how Jennifer is goth, I mean, it was a nice touch, but wouldn't it be super spooky if it was like " let's play!" All the time? What if she woke up at 1:00 and that thing was turned ON and looking at her saying "let's play!" Over and over again. But nice touch, anyway.

Great story. 8.5/10

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Bleh. The over and over thing is already so overkill.

⭕May 21 by ChocolateShake

7/10. Jennifer's story is sad and the narrorator is genuine, making the pasta more believable overall. Plus, the idea a Furby could mimic her words like a parrot is believable, too. But I'm not very creeped out. Some of your sentences can be re-worded to flow better, but other than that your structure is good.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Actually that whole furby parroting is based on the old myth that says furbies can actually "record" and "learn" what you say, which is old hat and false.

⭕May 17 by Lady Kraken

Descriptions were weird. Your paragraph on Jennifer being Goth needs reworking because it sounds kind of awkward. The idea was very good but Furbies don't creep me out, so it ended up being more silly than sad. If you could find another way to relay the mimicing of Jennifer in her last days, I'd like it a lot more.

4/10.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: But making it more original and better structured would knock it out of pasta and up into maybe bad comic. This story is just plain awful with that whole overkilled trapped soul bit. talk about anticlimax and unoriginal.

⭕May 15 by Iyamtebist

That was amazing. I love the subtlety here and how it leaves it up to the reader to decide about the furby

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Amazing? Please, no need to lay it on that thick. It stunk.

⭕May 14 by Stellarvore666

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: "666" Oh, brother, could you possibly get any less original?

⭕Stellarvore666: More sad than scary or creepy, if you ask me. But good. Though just because someone's goth doesn't mean they're depressed (I don't know if you meant to imply that, it's just that I've read such in other pastas before).

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: since when is it cool for a goth to be happy happy joy joy?

⭕May 21 by Stellarvore666

Of course, some people could get really depressed and have a misguided idea of what being goth really is (which I suspect was the case with Jennifer). And before you ask, no, I'm not goth, but I respect their subculture/lifestyle.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Bleh. Not into respecting subcultures much myself. There's a reason they are sub, not real culture. And every - last - one - I've had the displeasure of getting exposed to, were stinking obnoxious. Can we say "hipster"? Yeah, including those who are being hip by not being hip to make some sort of "Look at me! I'm really special!" statement. As in emo/goth. Sure some might really be depressed, others might not be. Who cares? If someone is truly depressed, belonging to some lame subculture isn't going to help. People have to earn my respect to get it, and, frankly, assimilation into some trendy subculture just doesn't cut it.

Omg jennifer commmitted suicide! How sad the furby creeps me out btw

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: I'm not one bit surprised. 1. Suicide. check. 2. Furby creepy. Check. Yep, typical pasta story. 3. OMG your handle sucks. How appropriate for a pasta fan.

⭕May 21 by WolfSoldier12

Jennifer didn't commit suicide, she had an overdose on drugs. It said that.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Same diff if she took those drugs voluntarily because she didn't care or was maybe too stupid to realize that, duh, they could kill her. So it really has nothing to do with the furby, it was her *cough* lifestyle that killed her. Her choice. She even said she wanted to die from what the story said about her journals. So it was suicide.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: *Wuss. *Sneer* Mr. Widemouth does not look like a furby, he's a blasted clown. Whoever tossed in that furby reference and pic just wanted to perpetuate the chain letter of furby-creep-out, again.
