The vehicle running over a mattress Meme

Is it a Jeep? A Ford? A Mustang?

We're not sure, but from posts I've read, it's a truck of some sort.

This meme was posted as a blond joke on this forum in 2013. But it has been around since at least 2008.

The chain mutated in March of 2009 to be about a woman. Surprise, surprise. The generic "this guy" wasn't good enough and Some misogynist must've come up with that change in one of their typical brain-farts.

Of course, some appearance-obsessed idiot got the brilliant idea to make it a blonde woman.

But all of this just goes to show it is not a true story, and I wouldn't be surprised if the pictures were either complete fakery or else real damage that had nothing to do with mattresses or this whacky story.

Chain1: What happens when you run over.... a mattress?

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: It gets wrecked…

Chain1: This guy
Chains2&3: A
Chain3: blonde
Chains2&3: woman

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: *Scowl* and just WHY is the colour of her hair so dang important to you?

Racial jokes are not cool.

Why?

Because it is both ignorant and rude to think bad things and look down on someone based on their ethnicity.

Most people get that, right?

Well, guess what?

Blonde jokes are NO DIFFERENT, no better!

You're still making fun of a woman based on the idea that if she's blonde, she must be stupid! That is no different from perpetuating the idea that (insert race) = *insert negative stereotype).

Making fun of someone based on appearance is rude and ignorant. Condemning it when applied to one group while laughing and applauding it being applied to another is so hypocritical it's beyond the pale.

If you condemn a racial joke yet laugh at a blonde joke, that's pretty much like saying it's not okay to beat little girls, but it's just fine to beat little boys.

And don't try to excuse the blonde thing with "I'm only talking about bottle-blondes." The viral didn't say her hair was dyed, only that she was a blonde.

More to the point, so what if she was a bottle-blonde. Hair dye does not diminish IQ, and she has as much right to dye her hair blonde as you do to get a tan, sun, bottle or salon, or get a tattoo, get your ears/nose/lips/tongue/eye lids/belly button or anything else, pierced.

Idiots come in all types, both genders, all skin tones, all ethnicities, all hair colours. I wouldn't have had as much problem with a story about some generic woman doing something stupid if the point wasn't deliberately designed to be "women are stupid" and "Blondes are the stupidest of them all."

Chains1, 2&3:ran over a mattress
Chains2&3: on the highway
Chains: and decided
Chains2&3: not to worry and kept on driving.
Chain1: to keep going.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Oh, sure, like it happens all the time, people just leaving mattresses on the road!

Considering this is unbelievable driving stupidity, and the freaking annoying stereotyping about bad women drivers, the guy works much better in the story.

Chain3: It caught on the undercarriage of her Ford...

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Interesting how the other mutations forgot to mention that.

And you're going to try telling me s/he was totally oblivious to that? You'd have to be practically asleep at the wheel to not notice something was just a bit off. Oh, but that's your whole point, isn't it? *Rolling eyes*

Chains1, 2&3: The ensuing jumble finally whipped around enough to
Chain1: put
Chains2&3: tear
Chains: a hole in the

Chain2: a stop.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Way too far-fetched to be believed.

Chain1: It
Chains2&3: She had

Chains: tangle
Chains2&3: of
Chain2: wire
Chain3: stuff
Chains: wrapped around
Chain1: it's
Chain2: the
Chain3: her
Chains: driveshaft.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Yeahright. You're trying to convince me this highly improbable thing happened when I just don't see how anybody could be that oblivious to something going wrong with their vehicle. And you still haven't filled me in on why a mattress was just lying there in the middle of the road.

Chain1: This genius
Chains2&3: She had it towed to
Chain2: the
Chain3: her Ford
Chains2&3: dealership and
Chains: complained
Chain1: to the dealership
Chains: that
Chain1: it
Chains2&3: the vehicle
Chains: had a
Chains2&3: “sort of
Chains: "shimmy" when
Chains2&3: she was
Chains: driving at high speeds.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: *Rolling eyes* I really don't understand what kind of person would be idiot enough to find this even amusing, let alone believable.

Chain1: Another American who thinks US products are inferior, no doubt.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: *Scowls* ARGH! Not with this freakin' "He did something stupid so he must hate america! Forget all foreign products! Buy American, exclusively! It's the great American way, the American dream and you are crushing it and being stupid by thinking anything might be wrong with an American-made product! america first! Only America matters!" America America America!"

I'll tell you what it really is, no doubt, you've just turned an unbelievably bad wreck of a tale into yet another pseudo-patriotic agenda that is bound to get anyone willing to jump to the conclusion you want, spreading this thing like wild fire. And who are among the worst for getting sucked into replicating this uber "Everybody hates America!" stuff? Just about anyone to the right of the aisle, from centre to the far-right! I've seen more of this kind of sentiment coming from firals pandering to the far-right, and being condoned or met with indifference at best by the non-left than I can count!

Taking these mutations together, what do we get? Somebody who thinks blonde women are stupid and is hammering out the "America" stuff that appeals to conservatives. This combines to make it look as if you must think blonde women are stupid and blondes are the worst if you are a conservative patriot.

This really ticks me off because it is exactly the sort of thing the left uses to vilify the non-left.

You should've left the America stuff out of it!

There are people who aren't really all that stupid, but they set up opportunities where stuff gets damaged just so they can either sue, or get something for nothing. This would seem to be more the case if your vehicle wreck actually happened the way you said it did, and I'm pretty sure it didn't.

Chain1: This is what the dealership found........

Chains2&3: Below are the photos of what they found at
Chain2: her
Chain3: the
Chains: dealership ...

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Oh, and we all know every picture on the internet is the absolute truth! *Sarcasm volume up full tilt*

I'm no authority on what can happen when a vehicle drives over something like a mattress, but will include a few posts from the Snopes message board about this chain.

Running Over a Mattress

Comment: Received this email today and can't find it on your site to verify if this is indeed what happened as stated:

To me that looks larger than a car.

And more like the remains of a box spring than a mattress.

But I could be wrong on both counts.

ETA: Here they claim it was a Jeep, and the driver was a guy.

EATA: Yeah, the earlier reports all say it was a guy, but it seems to have evolved (what a surprise) into a dumb blonde female driver.

Interesting. I've seen this one at least a dozen times and it's never once been a man in the example. It always says it's a woman and frequently says it was a blonde.

The earliest instances I can find online all seem to date from mid-December 2008, and they all blame "a guy." The woman pops up in March 2009.

OK, this is the first instance I can find, dated 25 November 2008. Same pictures, this text:

(Delete - it is the first mutation.)

Farther down the page the original poster adds:

Actually, it isn't a mustang, it's a truck.

It would still drive as the driveshaft was able to spin inside the tangled mess of the springs. The only reason it quit running was it punctured a hole in the gas tank and he ran out of gas.

As others have said, it's not a car, it's some kind of truck or big pickup.

I do not believe that the shaft could spin inside the mess of springs, if it could, they wouldn't have tangled up that tightly.

My guess on what happened: The car snagged the mattress. It quickly tangled up around the drive shaft. The car stopped, either because it couldn't spin, or because it was making an insane amount of noise as the coil ball slammed against the bottom of the car (there is not much clearance between the drive shaft and the bottom of the car). It got towed to the garage. People at the garage laughed at it. Someone said mattress to Mr Lambert. Twice.

The car looks very fixable, though. Just spend a day snipping away all the springs, and it will probably be on the road again.

That is definitely from a mattress, not from a box spring. Box springs don't have the spring coils in them; that's in the mattress.

So, apparently you are only wrong on one count.

Yes; when I got a look at some larger copies of those photos I could see that.

Except for the fact that all versions of this story indicate the gas tank was punctured. Probably gonna want to fix that, too.

I like that all the faces are black barred out like they don't even wanna be associated with this kind of stupidity.

If that really happened, yes. I doubt it, though, I think it simply stalled because the drive shaft was stopped.

Anyway, welding a gas tank is easy for any half-decent welder.

And that's it.

Over and out.
