Elf Yourself

ElfYourself.com in November 2007. You could insert your jpg pictures and click a button to turn them into animated sort of elf versions. That's not all. The bait and hook part done, this is where the meme showed its true colors. Next, you'd be urged to click another button to send to friends! That's right, spread it as a mutating meme, since everyone's pictures would be slightly different! That's what viral marketing is all about!

If you receive an elf, (such is the weirdness of this meme), the note tells you he or she is brought to you by Office Max, so that's the promotional bit. The chain letter part is this: the internet was soon inundated and squirming with so many people elfing themselves (is that even a word? Oh my...) that by the time the holidays were over, at least some people surely wouldn't want to see another elf for a very, very long time. So Even though I don't look like your typical Christmas elf, that meme still chagrinned me.

The site had good audio, something definitely in its favor. The sleigh bells with a couple of claps thrown in every so often make a charming background sound.

But, it was a viral scheme, so , still a chain letter.

It went away after the 2007 Christmas season, but sure enough, with the coming of the 2008 Christmas season came:

the Return of the Dreaded "Elf Yourself" - OH NO! and that is just one blog sighting.

Not cool!

Oh, there are elves who are just fine with sharing and even starting stupid chain letters... - But not me...!

Over and out!
