Thanks, Dear Mimi, Thanks,

by Maheen Wickramasinghe.

When I was a little toddler, at the age of 3,

My wonderful dear Acci, (Grandmother), whom we offectionally refer to as Mimi, came to Bermuda to see me.

Oh, so humble I was to spend time with her,

and to have taught so much from her was a tremendous joy and blessing.

Mimi taught me so much about being mature, and to be a good grown up lad,

and oh Lord I shall never forget the day she played on the piano, Maiden’s Prayer.

She knew something special would come about me,

and through it all, Mimi kept me happy.

Times were very rough for our dear Mimi,

but she never failed to keep me laughing and flapping my hands in those days.

She would always say, “I want good news, no bad news”.

I can always remember those nights in my very early childhood days, waking her up to sleep with me due to me being frightened to sleep by myself.

I shall never, ever forget for as long as I live, the day she introduced me to the first country standard, “The Prisoner’s Song”, by the late, Vernon Dalhart.

She taught me so much about Mathamatics,

spellings,

how to write,

and how to be a good boy.

Like many families, we had our share of ups and downs, which were not unusual.

One thing I shall never forget either, is how I teased her by calling her, “The Mistake Pianist!”

She would make mistakes on the piano, not her fault, quite obviously,

but it was so funny to me, and I loved to play pranks on her!

Then one day, she became weak and found it difficult to walk,

and words  can’t say to you how sorry I feel for being so obnoxious in those early young days.

Mimi loved the Cattle Call, by the legendary Eddy Arnold,

and would yodel till the work’s all done this fall.

Many Atchis live in a home, which I call, The House Of Shame,

but for dearr, dear Mimi, we will absolutely never in our whole enetire lives, put her to shame.

You see, our folks are getting’ older too, and we put them in a home,

but the only difference is, they live with us, an they’ll never, absolutely never, be alone.

When the good Lord calls her, and when the last leaf falls for our precious darling angel of a grandma, Mimi,

I will always think of her and will treat every single senior with kindness, not rudeness.

So Mimi, I know you are reading this, and I want to take this opportunity to thank you, very, very much, from the bottom of my hart, for sticking up for me, an for always being on my side no matter what.

Your warm love, hugs, humour, kisses and long chats, will always remain the apple of my eye, and those happy memories, shall never go away from my mind.

Even Atchi adored Brian Adam’s, “Everything I Do, I Do It For You”, and she would always quote that song to me.

As I write this tribute, tears are streaming down my eyes, and it is a good thing I am blind, in a good way, not a bad way.

So again, Mimi, thank you for everything, and I mean that very sincerely from the bottom of my heart. Thank you, may the good Lord bless and keep you healthy, and I will come see you soon in Texas.

At your funeral, I am going to play and sing, our favorite, “The Prisoner’s Song”. You will be safe with us, every single day. Even if I shed tears at your funeral, I will always remember you, long after this, till the summer is gone. You will be lovely always,

your sweet laughter shall be my highlights of our happy times together.           Thanks, dear Mimi, thanks. Love you Mimi!!!
