Scary Ellen Degeneres, The Living Meme Who Is Not What She Wants People To Think

Ellen Degeneres "Be kind" is buttkiss.

Ellen heckles people about things they buy, right down to their underwear. She denigrates people for taking one too many freebies from her merch. She stages spats about birthday parties - what is she, eight?

What really blows my mind is this:

Ellen tries to get people fired for stupid reasons like chipped nail polish.

Ellen tries to force people to reveal or prove they are or not pregnant by making them drink alcohol...

Ellen tries to scare people. I don't mean little jumpscares that are over in seconds, I mean triggering their phobias.

Ellen picks a staff member to bully daily!

Ellen and some of the producers treated guests badly.

Ellen DeGeneres accused of ‘mean’ behind-the-scenes behaviour by ex-employees

People are sharing startling alleged experiences with the TV host

Jacob Stolworthy

Monday 23 March 2020 10:35

People claiming to be ex-employees of Ellen DeGeneres are sharing some startling experiences they’re said to have had with the presenter.

The stories began circulating after comedian Kevin T Porter told Twitter he would donate $2 to a food bank in Los Angeles for every “insane story” his followers repeated about DeGeneres, whom he branded “notoriously one of the meanest people alive”.

It wasn’t too long before the alleged stories started flooding in, with apparent former TV workers revealing some eyebrow-raising accusations about their time behind-the-scenes on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

One story claimed that DeGeneres would send her staff home if they had failed to chew gum before speaking to her.

“She has a ‘sensitive nose’ so everyone must chew gum from a bowl outside her office before talking to her and if she thinks you smell that day you have to go home and shower,” one tweeter wrote.

Another added: “A new staff member was told ‘every day she picks someone different to really hate. It’s not your fault, just suck it up for the day and she’ll be mean to someone else the next day.’ They didn’t believe it but it ended up being entirely true.”

DeGeneres also apparently “had a PA fired for leading her to set the ‘long’ way”.

Someone who says she served the host at Real Food Daily claims that DeGeneres wrote a letter to the owner complaining about her chipped nail polish, which almost got her fired.

At the time of writing, Porter had donated $600 to the food bank.

A few tweeters called the decision to share the stories – which are unverified – “mean spirited”. One wrote: “Why would you encourage negativity, especially at such a trying time?”

A representative for DeGeneres and The Ellen Show failed to comment, but DeGeneres seemed to hint at the accusations in a new Instagram post.

Is Ellen DeGeneres mean?

Film Daily

If you still can’t believe Ellen DeGeneres could actually be mean, here’s a story about some nail polish suggesting otherwise.

August 10, 2020 Jason St. Jacques

Is Ellen DeGeneres mean? A waitress was nearly fired over nail polish Amidst allegations of her mean behavior, Ellen DeGeneres has endured some serious scrutiny in the spotlight over the past few months, with claims of everything from a “toxic” workplace to workplace harassment and general rude, diva-like behavior.

Although several A-list celebrities have emerged in support of DeGeneres, the talk show host’s alleged actions have divided viewers and encouraged witnesses to speak out on their experiences; dozens have produced stories and accusations, leading WarnerMedia group to launch an internal investigation, and Ellen to deliver a formal apology.

From instances ranging from heavy accusations of harassment to minor encounters of dissatisfaction, some speculate if group mentality and “cancel culture” have blown another story out of proportion. If you still can’t believe DeGeneres could actually be mean, here’s a story about some nail polish suggesting otherwise.

Need more convincing Ellen DeGeneres is mean? Find out even more about The Ellen DeGeneres Show scandals being uncovered.

Ellen DeGeneres: A tale of nail polish

An aspiring stand-up comedian moonlighting as a waitress serves a popular talk show host – then drama ensues. That’s exactly what happened to Chris Farah as she recalled a 2014 encounter with Ellen DeGeneres.

When an April 2020 Twitter thread exploded with stories describing why Ellen is “one of the meanest people alive,” it was near-impossible to keep track of all of the allegations from the former crew of Ellen’s show to those working in entertainment and hospitality industries.

One story caught attention more than others thanks to its account of Ellen outside of her celebrity persona, as a restaurant patron – one who tried to get her waitress fired over some nail polish.

Ellen DeGeneres: Not a typical celebrity diner

Chris Farah waited on Ellen and her wife, Portia de Rossi during a brunch shift at a vegan restaurant called Real Food Daily. Despite believing herself to be polite and charming, Farah’s personality was not enough to win over a judgmental DeGeneres.

Farah described her entire encounter to DailyMail, having noted Ellen’s demeanor as “a little weird” and even remembered Ellen asking about – and ordering – the same food as another celebrity in Farah’s section – Christina Applegate.

After her shift was over, Farah acknowledged the experience hadn’t been what she expected when serving a celebrity, but believed Ellen had an enjoyable experience – until Farah was confronted by her bosses a week later.

Ellen may be unemployed before the year is up. Unsure what’s going on? Take a look at where it all went wrong for Ellen DeGeneres.

Ellen gives mean feedback

When Chris Farah’s managers called the thirty-two-year-old over during a shift, Farah remembered they had asked her if she had waited on Ellen DeGeneres the week before. Farah also recalled to DailyMail how Ellen was a friend of the restaurant’s owner, and sincerely expected to receive positive feedback from the star’s visit.

Instead of praise, Farah received a warning from her managers – although not without some recognition of its absurdity. Reportedly, Ellen emailed the owner of Real Food Daily, her friend named Anne. The purpose of Ellen’s communication? To complain about how Farah had chipped nail polish on one finger while serving Ellen and Portia.

Thanks to pressure from the owner, the managers told Farah they’d be seeking consequences, beginning with a two-week suspension due to the complaint. Farah admitted she did chip her nail polish, but the timing of her shifts – closing at 11:30 the night before, and opening early that morning – did not allow time to get it fixed.

Ellen almost gets her waitress fired

Farah also recalled how other than the aesthetic of the minor detail itself, the chipped nail polish did not impact any other aspect of service, and especially not the food.

When Farah shared her thoughts with DailyMail, she described the entire situation through a lens of disappointment: “ really went out of her way to try to hurt someone who was beneath her and serving her.”

Farah followed her astonishment with, “It’s not anything akin to her image of ‘be kind’. It’s unnecessarily cruel and out of touch, and doesn’t understand the repercussions.” Instead of being subjected to the two week suspension, Farah had already put in a notice, deciding to pursue stand-up comedy as a full-time career.

Ellen DeGeneres: Holding “mean” accountable

Farah’s criticism of DeGeneres’s behavior informs the current discourse around the talk show host’s actions, and more relevant, adds controversy to the grounds on which other A-list celebrities have come to her defence.

As Farah concluded her thoughts during her interview, “ obviously a very rich, famous, television person. She has to assume the person serving her is not as rich or famous as her . . . and she knows the power she has over this particular restaurant and owner because she has a relationship with them.”

While some critics of the “cancel Ellen” movement are celebrities who express they’ve never been mistreated, accusers suggest this perspective overlooks the celebrity bias not accounting for the way DeGeneres treats any non-celebrity; Farah believes Ellen should be judged on these actions – the ones occurring outside of the spotlight.

There are signs backstage ordering the crew to “never look the host in the eye”. If Ellen thinks a crew member or a staff member smells bad, she sends them home to shower. Because she has issues with smell, she makes staff chew gum before entering her dressing room.

Staff also report that Ellen DeGeneres has a “least favorite” of the day.

A new staff member was warned that Ellen is vicious towards one staff member each day and when it’s “your turn,” to just ride it out.

He didn’t believe it at first, then he said it was true. Another source said Ellen treated them “like peasants.

Ellen DeGeneres' brutal staff humiliation exposed: 'Do we not pay you enough?'

ELLEN DEGENERES brutally humiliated staff members about their Facebook pictures and salary during an episode of her eponymous US show.

By JOSH SAUNDERS

PUBLISHED: 14:58, Thu, Aug 13, 2020 | UPDATED: 14:58, Thu, Aug 13, 2020

Ellen DeGeneres has come under fire recently after employees complained that the US TV host had created a “toxic” work environment and branded her a “bully”. The star, 62, has been defended by a number of A-list celebrities since the allegations came to light, while an internal investigation is carried out. It was speculated that BBC ‘Gavin and Stacey’ star James Corden, 41, may take over her slot and had been tipped to replace her in the long term. Unearthed clips from ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’, which aired on ITV2 in the UK, reveal the unusual relationship between staff and the star.

DeGeneres launched a segment of the programme where she would typically show photographs from her audience’s Facebook profiles – but this time there was a twist.

Instead of playfully mocking her in-studio viewers with comments about the images, she turned her sharp tongue to staff members.

First she launched a cheeky attack on her audience producer Claudia in August 2013 and started by asking her: “How are you doing?”

The employee squirmed in her ‘Ellen’ emblazoned hoodie and claimed to be “good” before she revealed: “Now I’m mortified.”

DeGeneres beamed as she continued: “Here is a picture Claudia posted, I’m just curious about what’s going on right here?”

In a quickfire flood of questions, she yelled: “Do we not pay you enough? Why aren’t you buying ‘Ellen’ underwear? What are you doing going to Chinatown? What are those underwear for?”

A flushed Claudia tried to justify the photograph before she was interrupted: “Those were 10 Cents (the equivalent of seven pence) in Hong Kong, we were just showing
”

DeGeneres continued to jest: “No I can see how much, I can see the price right there! So, no matter what it looks like you’ll buy it if it’s 10 Cents. Is that what you’re about?”

The staff member awkwardly laughed as she shook her head before the star probed: “Do you have those on now?”

Claudia adamantly stated “No, I do not”, before in an uncomfortable moment DeGeneres fired back: “Prove it!”

The host continued to lambast other crew members, including one who she jokingly accused of being “drunk all the time” and made an X-rated remark about him holding bowling balls by his crotch.

She embarrassed another staff member for having “passed out” in her car after an TV awards ceremony and another for a photograph with a man believed to be a stripper.

DeGeneres ended the segment: “I want to thank my staff for posting those pictures. Usually when I show photos of my audience they get iPads but all of my staff you’re meeting with human resources!”

What really happened to Mariah Carey on Ellen's show

BY ERICA ANDREWS AND MELISSA WILLETS/AUG. 3, 2020 4:15 PM EDT/UPDATED: AUG. 4, 2020 2:42 PM EDT

Ellen DeGeneres continues to make headlines this week, as an uncomfortable interview with Mariah Carey has resurfaced on Reddit. The pop singer made an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2008 with rumors swirling at the time that she was pregnant, according to the Mirror. The comedian asked about the speculation, but Carey declined to answer in the video and was clearly and understandably uncomfortable. That's when DeGeneres decided to double down on her tactic to get the scoop.

In the cringe-worthy clip, the host can then be seen grabbing two glasses of champagne and says, "Let's toast to you not being pregnant if you're not pregnant." Carey replied, "Don't discuss that. This is peer pressure." But unfortunately, DeGeneres did not take no for an answer, and continued to push the "Hero" singer to take a drink from the glass. Carey tried to play it down and said it was too early for champagne, and that it's fattening, but the audience took it as confirmation she was pregnant.

Sadly, as Carey revealed a couple of years later to Access Hollywood per ABC News, she had a miscarriage just weeks after the interview. "It's been a long journey," she said. "It's been tough, because I've been trying to hold on to a shred of privacy." The pop icon said going through the miscarriage was devastating for her. "It kind of shook us both and took us into a place that was really dark and difficult," Carey said. "When that happened ... I wasn't able to even talk to anybody about it. That was not easy."

Fortunately, Carey and Nick Cannon announced in 2010 that she was pregnant again — this time on their own schedule, in the Access Hollywood interview with Billy Bush. "Yes, we are pregnant, this is true!" the ecstatic singer shared. She and Cannon would welcome twins Moroccan and Monroe in 2011 (via ABC News).

Incredibly, this wasn't the only time DeGeneres prodded Carey to overshare about a pregnancy. In 2010, the host tried to get the singer to reveal the gender of her baby — which actually ended up being babies, and one of each. But Carey wasn't interested in telling the entire world if she and Cannon were expecting a boy or a girl. When DeGeneres wouldn't give up on her line of questioning about the sex, the soon-to-be mom schooled the host about the nursery she was planning at home: "It's called gender neutral" (via Reddit). Carey went on to insist, "I'm not going to impose pink on a girl." But she didn't confirm she was even having a girl.

In fact, according to ABC News, the famous couple didn't know the gender of their babies until the birth, instead, wanting to keep it a surprise for the big day.

Another notable interview that perhaps exposed DeGeneres' not-so-nice side took place in 2019 and featured actress Dakota Johnson (via ET). At first, the host started giving the star flack about not inviting her to a recent birthday party. But Johnson wasn't having it, saying actually DeGeneres was invited after being upset about not being invited the year before. But Johnson then protested about the lack of invitation, "I didn't even know you liked me." This year, the actress assured DeGeneres she was invited to the party, and then added, "You didn't come."

DeGeneres swore she wasn't invited. "Ask everybody," Johnson quickly shot back. The host's producer confirmed she had been invited, to which DeGeneres asked, "Why didn't I go?" The comedian, not to be outdone, brushed off the gaffe with a joke: "Oh yeah, I had that thing."

But the interview made viewers at home cringe. "What bothers me the most is that Ellen never said she was sorry!" one commenter to the YouTube video noted. Another said, "Ellen finally got to feel how she made [every] artist embarrassed for her [audience's] entertainment." Still many more commenters praised Johnson for not letting DeGeneres bully her into backing down.

DeGeneres, for her part, recently released a statement about reports that her show is a toxic place to work. Allegations from current and former staffers have surfaced about producers who let racism and intimidation run wild. While the star is not being directly accused of any wrongdoing, many people feel strongly that she should have known what was going on behind the scenes of her show. And a source told BuzzFeed DeGeneres' famous "be kind to one another" line is just for show.

Meanwhile, according to People, the beleaguered host recently wrote a long apology to her staff saying in part, she was disappointed that the show wasn't a place of happiness and she was glad the issues were brought up. WarnerMedia said there would be multiple staffing changes and other actions taken to address problems that were brought up by the staff.

For now, it's not known if The Ellen DeGeneres show will continue to air. Reports have swirled that she may not return, but sources say it's more likely the show will go on (via USA Today).

Is Ellen DeGeneres Actually Mean?

Is Ellen DeGeneres Actually Mean? Many Tweeters Are Sharing Not-So-Nice Stories About the 'Be Kind' TV Host

Catherine Wright

March 23, 2020

Ellen DeGeneres is known for a lot of things. The Ellen DeGeneres Show star loves to dance (and make her audience dance). She’s played the first openly gay character on primetime television. DeGeneres is a hilarious comedian with one of the most successful talk shows in history. And, of course, she ends each of her episodes telling her audience to “be kind.” However, many former employees of the famous talk show host are now sharing stories that don’t exactly represent the “kindness” she promotes. Is Ellen DeGeneres faking the whole “nice” act for television? Twitter recently blew up with anecdotes arguing just that.

Comedian calls Ellen DeGeneres ‘notoriously one of the meanest people alive’

Kevin T. Porter is “a comedian, writer, podcast producer, and let’s just face it, A GOOD TIME,” according to his website. Porter co-hosts several popular podcasts, including Good Christian Fun, Inside Voices, Maisel Goys (in which they recap The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel episodes), and Gilmore Guys (in which they recap Gilmore Girls episodes).

“Right now we all need a little kindness,” Porter wrote on Twitter recently. “You know, like Ellen Degeneres always talks about!” He then tweeted out a call for Ellen DeGeneres stories. Specifically: ones about her being mean.

“She’s also notoriously one of the meanest people alive,” Porter continued. “Respond to this with the most insane stories you’ve heard about Ellen being mean & I’ll match every one w/ $2 to @LAFoodBank.” Porter is graciously donating his money to a food bank during the coronavirus pandemic, which may leave many families low on cash (and food). Not so gracious is the approach.

tweet

But – the Ellen DeGeneres stories came absolutely flooding in.

Stories about DeGeneres don’t portray the talk show host in a great light

Kevin T. Porter at Entertainment Weekly’s Popfest in 2016 | Tibrina Hobson/FilmMagic Many people responding to Porter’s tweet told tales of how the talk show host was rude to them when they were serving her at a restaurant. Others came from former employees or friends of former employees of The Ellen DeGeneres Show. One former staff member of the show recalled:

I worked for her show for a couple years on the digital team. I’m afraid i have no stories of negative interactions with her on account of we weren’t allowed to talk to or in any way interact with her.

One former server remembered:

I worked @RealFoodDaily, served her & Porsha at brunch. She wrote a letter to the owner & complained about my chipped nail polish (not that it was on her plate but just that it was on my hand). I had worked till closing the night before & this was next morn, almost got me fired.

“Worked at her favorite 3 Michelin star restaurant in college (dinner bills 5k + regularly). REFUSES TO TIP. One time staff stayed 4 hours past closing for her,” another tweeted.

Some tweeters, however, didn’t need a personal interaction with DeGeneres to know she was not so nice. They needed to only look to The Ellen DeGeneres Show to find examples of her meanness.

“She’s friends with George W. Bush,” one tweeter snarked.

“Ellen scares people??? With the things they are notoriously afraid of?????Everyday???? On live TV????” another person commented.

‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’: not too fun a place to work

Writer and comedian Benjamin Siemon also had several stories to share.

“She has a ‘sensitive nose’ so everyone must chew gum from a bowl outside her office before talking to her and if she thinks you smell that day you have to go home and shower,” Siemon wrote. In another tweet, he claimed:

A new staff member was told ‘every day she picks someone different to really hate. It’s not your fault, just suck it up for the day and she’ll be mean to someone else the next day.

“Some friends who work /worked on her show said many of her staff members weren’t allowed to be in the same room as her!” one tweeter commented.

Other tweeters got their information through other television shows they worked on. One Twitter user remembered:

i was PAing for the Letterman special and her rider was 50 items long and one was specific vegan cauliflower puffs that are rarely sold so i had to drive to 15 different grocery stores to find it and she didn’t even touch them

Yet another chimed in:

When I was working on @midnight, our stage manager (coolest mf’er I’ve ever worked with) told us to never work for Ellen. He told us she has signs up in her office that say “Do not look the host in the eye

An alleged former employee of DeGeneres’ agent wrote:

I was her agents exec asst for a year, so many! 1st thing you learn on the desk is if he was on a call w another client You have to beep in & say “your kids on the other line, it’s an emergency” so he could take the call as she could never be called back bc she would fire him lol

Ellen DeGeneres does not sound kind at all

So many tweeters commented their DeGeneres stories, that Porter got a bit overwhelmed.

“Well this got out of hand!” he wrote on Twitter. “It’s now hard to tell which stories are real or not, so I’ve rounded up to 300 and donated $600!”

He left it off with one final message.

“If you can, please give to your local food banks because they are slammed right now,” Porter tweeted, but not before throwing some more shade at DeGeneres.

“
honestly, be kind, especially to those in the most vulnerable positions right now. But be TRULY kind,” the comedian wrote. “Don’t settle for a cheap imitation.”

Not so kind: Why The Ellen DeGeneres show is under investigation

The Ellen DeGeneres Show under investigation amid toxic work allegations

'The Ellen DeGeneres Show' is being investigated by WarnerMedia amid allegations of a "toxic work environment".

Tribune Content Agency

Cassandra Tassios

“Be kind to one another” is the catchphrase Ellen DeGeneres is known for, but recent reports claims the talk show’s environment is rife with racism and bullying.

Writers are claimed to favour white employees, and there’s allegations DeGeneres has forced staff to go home and shower.

The Ellen DeGeneres Show is reportedly under internal investigation by WarnerMedia following multiple accusations of workplace bullying and racism directed at the host and her senior team.

Crew and staff received a memo last week from Telepictures, the show’s producer, as well as distributor, Warner Bros. Television, indicating they had engaged WarnerMedia’s employee relations group and a third party to investigate the matter.

Current and former team members will be interviewed about their experience with DeGeneres and her higher-ups to establish if the claims had any validity to them.

Ellen DeGeneres Former fans caused ‘#RIPEllen’ to trend on Twitter, mocking the demise of her career.

The WarnerMedia investigation follows outrage from employees about poor conditions and lack of communication from executives during the early days of the pandemic.

Fuel was added to the fire in the form of an onslaught of negative comments from ex-Ellen employees, who took to social media to air their grievances at the 62-year-old.

But how exactly did one of television’s most beloved personalities earn the moniker of “one of the meanest people alive”?

‘Be kind’, but only for the cameras

Nikkie De Jager found fame on YouTube. Photo: Getty Popular YouTube make-up artist Nikkie de Jager, known as NikkieTutorials, was one of the first figures to call out DeGeneres in February.

“Maybe I’m being naive, but I expected them to welcome me with confetti: ‘Welcome to The Ellen DeGeneres Show‘!” she told Dutch publication &C Magazine, which was translated by Pop Crave.

“But instead I got greeted by an angry intern, who was a bit overworked. I expected a Disney show, but I got a Teletubbies after dark.”

It wasn’t until April that fans finally began to take notice: Comedian Kevin T. Porter asked Twitter for people to share their experiences with DeGeneres.

The thread was flooded with nearly 3000 responses casting the comedian in a bad light, many from former interns and crew members, as well as those working at neighbouring Warner Bros. lots.

According to Buzzfeed, the toxic culture extended to some writers and senior executives and producers of the show, with one employee coming forward to share two experiences of micro-aggression and racism directed towards her.

The former employee said that a writer on the show joked that writers and senior staff only remembered the names of white employees.

Another senior-level producer allegedly told the same employee and a fellow black colleague, “Oh wow, you both have box braids; I hope we don’t get you confused.”

Not so generous after all

DeGeneres continued to lose favour with audiences during the pandemic for a poorly timed joke about her living conditions.

Fans accused the comedian of being out of touch and insensitive for comparing isolating in her $US27 million mega-mansion to being in jail.

“One thing I’ve learned from being in quarantine is that people – this is like being in jail, is what this is,” DeGeneres said in a segment for her show.

“It’s mostly because I’ve been wearing the same clothes for 10 days, and everyone in here is gay.”

Furthermore, more than 30 employees who make up the core stage crew on Ellen, which has recently completed its 17th season, had not received any form of written communication outlining the show’s pandemic procedures or the future of their positions, as the show went into hiatus earlier this year.

Two employees told Variety that higher-ups and executives would often dodge calls, and refused to reveal information about the employees’ hours, pay and employment status when probed further.

After a month of radio silence, crew members were finally notified to expect a pay cut of up to 60 per cent.

Adding salt to the wound, DeGeneres has continued to tape remotely during isolation from her home in California, but has outsourced a non-union tech company to assist her.

Is Ellen DeGeneres to blame for her show’s toxicity? Ex-staff says “yes”

The investigation into the toxic workplace that is The Ellen DeGeneres Show has wrapped up. With it, three producers have been fired for their actions by WarnerMedia. Ellen has also pledged to improve workplace conditions when they go back to a regular filming schedule. Still, however, many people wonder just how complicit Ellen really was in letting the workplace get that bad.

In the original Buzzfeed News article that kickstarted the scandal, the current and ex-staff members said that Ellen didn’t do anything with the toxic workplace culture. On the other, she also didn’t do anything to stop how bad the behind-the-scenes got on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. After all, the boss sets the tone for the series. Ellen has enough mean acts that have been shared as well.

But is Ellen DeGeneres to blame for the show’s toxicity? Really? Well, some ex-staff are saying “yes”. Here’s why.

Lack of involvement

After news of the investigation broke, The Sun went to current and former The Ellen DeGeneres Show staff, who said that Ellen could have done more to make the environment on the show better. Due to her lack of involvement, things festered so to speak.

“If she wants to have her own show and have her name on the show title, she needs to be more involved to see what’s going on. I think the executive producers surround her and tell her, ‘Things are going great, everybody’s happy,’ and she just believes that, but it’s her responsibility to go beyond that.”

Other complaints

Other employees have also said that Ellen presents an image on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, but it’s very different when the cameras are off. In fact, many that talked to The Sun said that Ellen was more concerned with protecting her image over anything else. This backfired horribly as people learned that her “be kind” mantra was a load of bull.

Unfortunately, Ellen’s outing as two-faced has people side-eyeing her apology and promises to change. Hopefully, there will be some kind of oversight when the crew gets back to work on the set of The Ellen DeGeneres Show. So will anything come out of her promises?

With the media attention and staff willing to talk with the press, we can hope that these changes will be implemented and Ellen will actually take more of a leadership role on the show. But, as staff pointed out, this is something Ellen should have been doing from the beginning.

What happens if things don’t change?

If things don’t change, then it’s more than likely that The Ellen DeGeneres Show will be canceled. There have been rumors swirling around since July of this year that the show will be canceled. Either way, the scrutiny around Ellen DeGeneres probably isn’t going away any soon. It’s up to her to change her actions.

‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’: All the times Ellen was terrible to guests

Film Daily

Though we’ll never have footage to prove what Ellen's like off camera, we can take a look at her on 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show'. Here's a few examples.

June 26, 2020 Brynley Louise

‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’: All the times Ellen was terrible to guests

Ellen DeGeneres has had a tough go of it recently as accusation after accusation of being not-so-secretly mean have been piling up since October of 2019. In fact, her show has recently seen such a dramatic drop in viewership that if the numbers don’t improve, the ratings would be grounds for NBC to cancel The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Not only have some of the people who worked for her come forward, but celebrities have too. They’ve talked about the unusual and rude things which have happened off camera when appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. With so many anecdotes from so many different people it gets hard to remain skeptical of what people are saying.

Though we’ll never have footage to prove what she’s like off camera, we can take a look at clips from The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which have occasionally shown DeGeneres in a less than stellar light.

Dakota Johnson in 2019

In November of 2019 Dakota Johnson was a guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Ellen starts the interview clip by saying “happy belated birthday – when was your birthday?” Johnson informs her interviewer it was a month ago, to which Ellen asks why she wasn’t invited to the party.

Dakota’s response is that Ellen was invited. Degeneres looks shocked and repeatedly presses Johnson on whether she’s sure. Johnson continues to pull receipts saying DeGeneres had previously given her crap for not getting birthday party invites, so, yes, she’s sure. They continue their spat on live television and Johnson even tells DeGeneres she didn’t know the host liked her.

The entire interview, while being played for laughs to the live audience, is fraught with awkward and passive aggressive energy. However, it looks like Johnson fully expected DeGeneres to come for her and was more than ready for a weird interview. Even the comments on the video are all very weirded out by the clip.

Hasan Minhaj in 2019

Minhaj is a very popular comedian, and had his first appearance (maybe his last) on The Ellen DeGeneres show in April of last year. Ellen starts by saying how much she’s a fan of him and then immediately mispronounces his name.

Minhaj says “no” to which DeGeneres has the audacity to fight him on it and replies “yes”. He tells her how to say it . . . and then she gets it wrong again. He takes a serious moment to explain to people his name is important to him and his parents who are in the audience, and yet DeGeneres doesn’t seem to take him entirely seriously.

Not taking the five minutes to Google the pronunciation of a guest’s name is embarrassing, since it’s her job. Especially when she can have an intern do it and relay the information to her.

An audience member in 2017 In 2017 DeGeneres started a segment by saying she wanted to see how honest her audience was. She set up a swag table where members of the live audience could take one Ellen branded item as a free gift.

However, when someone inevitably took more than one item, the hidden cameras caught her and Ellen DeGeneres shamed her for doing the very thing she set out to catch someone doing. It was completely a setup.

The guest is clearly uncomfortable for being called out on national television, but does her best to play it off as funny by slapping her own hand a couple times. DeGeneres even makes her go up on stage and sit in the corner in a timeout-esque situation.

Taylor Swift in 2013

A lot of these examples are more recent, but the long running DeGeneres show has had questionable moments for a long time. One of the most heartbreaking occurred in an interview with Taylor Swift where she looks nearly ready to burst into tears.

DeGeneres wants to play a game where the Swift (who has been known to have a number of high profile romances over the years) to ring a bell whenever a picture of a guy she has dated shows up on the big screen.

Swift refuses to play for many minutes saying she doesn’t want to upset anyone. Eventually Ellen just starts ringing the bell herself and Swift desperately cries for DeGeneres to stop saying it makes her feel bad about herself every time she comes on the show. This is the most obvious case of bullying we’ve seen on the show.

There are countless other video clips of DeGeneres not listening to guests, blowing them off, or otherwise being rude to them. Not to mention some of her guests genuinely don’t enjoy her frequent attempts to scare them. However, these are some of the most obvious and uncomfortable clips to watch.

🙃Fascinates me how those accusing others of being mean can be the meanest! She’s a comedian guys! If you chuckled when she said it , it would be hypocritical to criticize those comments now! Thin skinned people can be the harshest of all of us.

All the most problematic things Ellen DeGeneres has done on her show

Ellen DeGeneres has become problematic. Not a “problematic fave”, but just straight up problematic. From the thousands of stories on Twitter shared about her mean behavior to celebs clapping back at her for past actions, Ellen DeGeneres is having a fall from grace. Despite promoting a message of kindness, people have been wondering lately just how believable such a message really is coming from her.

The problematic behavior for Ellen DeGeneres though has been going on for a while. Here are some of the most problematic things that Ellen has done on her show over the years.

Comparing her home to prison Only the most introverted of introverts celebrated when we didn’t go out amongst the public when lockdowns and quarantines were initiated in March. Still there’s a difference from being quarantined in a studio apartment worrying about your paycheck versus quarantined in a multi-million dollar mansion.

Ellen, apparently, doesn’t realize this difference though. When her show returned, she compared her quarantine to being “in prison”. It got her immediate backlash because, as people pointed out, she’s in a multi-million dollar home versus the rest of us. Also most of her crew was out of a job for the time being so, like, it was in poor taste there Ellen.

Mind games with Dakota Johnson

Ellen DeGeneres gave Dakota Johnson a hard time for not inviting her to her birthday party when the actress appeared on her show in 2019. Johnson, however, was not going to let the ragging lie. She called Ellen out saying that yes she did invite her.

“Actually, no, that’s not the truth, Ellen. You were invited. Last time I was on the show, you gave me a bunch of shit about not inviting you, but I didn’t even know you wanted to be invited.”

She added that she “didn’t even know you like me.” A producer tried to clear up the mess saying Ellen was “out of town”, but that just rings real false right now.

Sending her producer into a haunted house every year

We all have that one friend who hates being scared. They hate horror movies. They hate haunted houses. They just don’t like horror. So, of course, sometimes there’s the urge to scare them. Once or twice is fine, but continuing to do this to a person just . . . well it’s not really nice. If someone is scared of something and doesn’t like it, then you shouldn’t make them do it.

Every year, Ellen DeGeneres sent her producer, Andy, to a haunted house. Andy doesn’t like it. It’s been going on for almost a decade. You know what? At this point he’s either desensitized or they need to let the joke die.

Not bothering to learn how to pronounce Hasan Minhaj’s name

If you’re not watching Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj on Netflix, then you really should because it’s fantastic. Ellen, however, clearly has never done so because she couldn’t even learn how to pronounce Hasan Minhaj’s name when he came onto her show. In fact, Ellen mispronounced his name.

Note for all of you who want to do interviews or get into broadcast, learn how to pronounce people’s names, okay! And if you can’t find it, then ask ahead of going on national television. Minhaj called out Ellen, saying if she could pronounce Ansel Elgort’s name, then she could pronounce his.
