Hideaway is a beautiful work of art by artist Inga Nielsen, and was created using a program called Terragen™
She has this to say about how this image became an urban legend.
👩🎨"someone "cut out my name, called the image "Sunset at the north pole" and told everyone it was a photograph."
🧝♀️The art has been around since at least 2006, but the urban legend even got an Islamic mutation for Ramadan at as this September 22, 2009 blog entry shows.
The 2009 mutations tacked on a supposed Chinese proverb, which was likely meant by the hoaxer to get their hoax spreading. However, the proverb is worded in such a way that it can be rightly used for the opposite purpose.

😏Meme2:: Subject: FW: : Sunset at the North Pole
🤡Meme3: SUNSET AT THE NORTH POLE HERALDS IN RAMADHAAN
😏Meme2:: Photographed during the week of May 11, 2009
🤡Meme3: September 22, 2009
😏Meme2:: North Pole Moon
🤡Meme3: Al-Quran : and which of the favours of your Lord would ye deny ?
🧝♀️Ocean Elf: I'm pretty sure taking a piece of art, changing the title, not giving the artist due credit, and passing it off as a real photo of something that never happened, is not a favour bestowed upon or expected of me by The Lord.
🤡Meme3: SUNSET AT THE NORTH POLE HERALDS IN RAMADHAAN 1430 A.H.
🧝♀️Ocean Elf: Nope, it didn't happen in 2006, in 2009, and is very unlikely to in the future.
🙃😏🤡Memes:: This is the sunset at the North Pole with the moon at its closest point
😏🤡Memes2&3: last week.
🧝♀️Ocean Elf: No it isn't. This is art work that was created at least as far back as some time in 2006.
🙃😏🤡Memes: A scene you will probably never get to see,
😏🤡Memes2&3: in person,
🧝♀️Ocean Elf: Nobody gets to see a piece of art "in person" when they're looking at an online image. You can view a painting in person if you literally have the canvas right in front of you. The closest you can ever get to that with an online image is viewing it right on the site of the original source. Ah never mind, that probably went over your head.
Unless nature imitates this piece of art specifically and the world gets word of when it would happen via Nasa and not some anonymous chain mail, just don't get excited.
🙃😏🤡Memes: so take a moment and enjoy
🤡Meme3: the ALMIGHTY
🙃😏🤡Memes: work at the North Pole.
🧝♀️Ocean Elf: Look, it's not God or nature's work at the North Pole. Not back in 2006, not in May or during ramadan in 2009, not now, not ever. Yes, by all means, do enjoy and admire the picture, but remember where it really comes from.
🤡Meme3: "And which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?" – Al-Quraan.
🧝♀️Ocean Elf: You already said that. I already answered that.
🙃😏🤡Memes: And, you also see the sun below the moon.
🧝♀️Ocean Elf: In the art work, yes, I'm sure.
🙃😏🤡Memes:: An amazing photo
🧝♀️Ocean Elf: Not an amazing 'photo', but an amazing work of art.
🙃😏🤡Memes: and not one easily duplicated.
🧝♀️Ocean Elf: I hope not, this art should be unique to Inga Nielsen. I realize you probably only said that just to ramp up the whole breathless appeal-factor, and make it sound as if this forward is totally a once in a lifetime experience! But - you failed with me.
😏🤡Memes2&3: You may want To pass it on to others so they can enjoy it.
🧝♀️Ocean Elf: No, at least, not in this meme. I'd be more than happy to direct people to the Hoax-slayer page debunking this chain, and to the artist's page, but I'm not passing on this meme full of erroneous statements. That's doing a disservice to the artist among other things.
😏🤡Memes2&3: The Chinese have a saying that goes something like this:
🧝♀️Ocean Elf: Which you will then twist for the purpose of getting people to spread this chain letter…
😏🤡Memes2&3: ‘When someone shares with you something of value,
🧝♀️Ocean Elf: Keywords being "of value" which these chain letters are not.
😏🤡Memes2&3: you have an obligation to share it with others!’
🧝♀️Ocean Elf: of course, I don't know for sure if there is or isn't such a Chinese proverb, but it's likely. However, the keyword still remains "of value" so I'm pretty sure that if there is such a proverb, it is telling the rich to give to the poor and less well-off. And that if you have a talent or gift, or bit of wisdom, to share it, not keep it to yourself. The problem I have with the proverb itself is the word "obligation" if you give out of obligation, is that even sincere?
😏🤡Memes2&3: I just did..
🧝♀️Ocean Elf: No, actually, you only kidded yourself. To start with, this chain letter is of no real value when it lies about a piece of art and strips the artist of due credit. Second, it is nothing short of mockery and blasphemy to do the above and invoke the name of God while doing it. Third, it is obviously loaded with false obligation, you made sure of that when adding in this "Chinese" proverb. Fourth, you either started or fell for it. Not looking too good for you.
😏🤡Memes2&3: Your turn. -
🧝♀️Ocean Elf: Okay, I have something of value to share, which is right at the top of this mangling. It's the truth about this image, it is not the work of God or Allah in the sky, but a creation by Inga Nielsen, who deserves credit for it. And while we're recapping, the picture is called "Hideaway" not "Sunset At The North Pole." Please inform anyone you see spreading the false photograph story of the truth, and return their chain letter with something of actual value.
Over and out.
