Candle Cove

Candle Cove is a meme created by Kris Straub. It's a story that was inspired by content from Theonion.com.

It is in the form of faux web forum posts about, what else? A nonexistent kiddy show that is static but little kids supposedly think they are watching a program. The meme has infested Youtube as pasta fans make videos of static and then pretend they believe they are actually seeing a show.

This creepy pasta apparently invaded a subreddit, and prompted a She points out there was a show called Crashbox, and she has clips of it. What a weird show. And it was probably the inspiration for the creepy pasta.

I would give Crashbox the crash.

Now, let's mangle this meme and cook the creepy pasta.

Here we go through a bunch of fake emails.

Skyshale033: Subject: Candle Cove local kidā€™s show?

Does anyone remember this kidā€™s show? It was called Candle Cove and I must have been 6 or 7. I never found reference to it anywhere so I think it was on a local station around 1971 or 1972. I lived in Ironton at the time. I donā€™t remember which station, but I do remember it was on at a weird time, like 4:00 PM.

Ocean Elf: The reason there are no references to it is because it never existed. 4 P.M.'s not that weird a time for a little kid show to be on. Mr. Dressup used to be on after school when I was in the very early school grades. So were cartoons.

mike_painter65: Subject: Re: Candle Cove local kidā€™s show?

it seems really familiar to meā€¦..i grew up outside of ashland and was 9 yrs old in 72. candle coveā€¦was it about pirates? i remember a pirate marionete at the mouth of a cave talking to a little girl

Ocean Elf: Yeah right. Talking through your hat.

Skyshale033: Subject: Re: Candle Cove local kidā€™s show?

YES! Okay Iā€™m not crazy! I remember Pirate Percy. I was always kind of scared of him. He looked like he was built from parts of other dolls, real low-budget. His head was an old porcelain baby doll, looked like an antique that didnā€™t belong on the body. I donā€™t remember what station this was! I donā€™t think it was WTSF though.

Ocean Elf: Oh, please, what little kid is going to be all that critical about characters being made of disproportionate doll parts?

Jaren_2005: Subject: Re: Candle Cove local kidā€™s show?

Sorry to ressurect this old thread but I know exactly what show you mean, Skyshale. I think Candle Cove ran for only a couple months in ā€˜71, not ā€˜72. I was 12 and I watched it a few times with my brother. It was channel 58, whatever station that was. My mom would let me switch to it after the news. Let me see what I remember.

It took place in Candle cove, and it was about a little girl who imagined herself to be friends with pirates. The pirate ship was called the Laughingstock, and Pirate Percy wasnā€™t a very good pirate because he got scared too easily. And there was calliope music constantly playing. Donā€™t remember the girlā€™s name. Janice or Jade or something. Think it was Janice.

Ocean Elf: Back in 72 your TV went all the way up to channel 58? Golly gee, ours only had like 13 channels. Sheesh, you people can't even decide on the channel or the year, but the bottom line is it's all bogus.

Skyshale033: Subject: Re: Candle Cove local kidā€™s show?

Thank you Jaren!!! Memories flooded back when you mentioned the Laughingstock and channel 58. I remember the bow of the ship was a wooden smiling face, with the lower jaw submerged. It looked like it was swallowing the sea and it had that awful Ed Wynn voice and laugh. I especially remember how jarring it was when they switched from the wooden/plastic model, to the foam puppet version of the head that talked.

Ocean Elf: Gah, anybody can play that game. For examples, Idiot 1 says: "Oh, like OMG I remember that time back when Channel XYZ showed a show about a mad flying orange juicer that fell in love with a pencil does anybody else remember? It was like way scary, the pencil had eyes!" The Show was called 'See The Fruit Of Your Passion'"

This is nothing more than tall-tale telling wrapped up in a mask of "I remember, do you remember?"

mike_painter65: Subject: Re: Candle Cove local kidā€™s show?

ha ha i remember now too. ;) do you remember this part skyshale: ā€œyou haveā€¦to goā€¦INSIDE.ā€

Ocean Elf: Idiot2 says, "Oh, now I remember those eyes! Do you remember the really scary part where the pencil stuck herself in the juicer trying to get sharpened because she was too busy looking at the eraser to see where she was going? OMG I had nightmares about that for weeks! And that show was on at like two in the afternoon."

Skyshale033: Subject: Re: Candle Cove local kidā€™s show?

Ugh mike, I got a chill reading that. Yes I remember. Thatā€™s what the ship always told Percy when there was a spooky place he had to go in, like a cave or a dark room where the treasure was. And the camera would push in on Laughingstockā€™s face with each pause. YOU HAVEā€¦ TO GOā€¦ INSIDE. With his two eyes askew and that flopping foam jaw and the fishing line that opened and closed it. Ugh. It just looked so cheap and awful.

You guys remember the villain? He had a face that was just a handlebar mustache above really tall, narrow teeth.

Ocean Elf: Idiot1 says," Oh, I got chills when you said that. I suddenly remembered it so well! That mad eraser lying there, looking so scarily up at the juicer and his creepy voice saying 'I'll rub you out.'"

kevin_hart: Subject: Re: Candle Cove local kidā€™s show?

i honestly, honestly thought the villain was pirate percy. i was about 5 when this show was on. nightmare fuel.

Ocean Elf: idiot3 says, "I honestly thought the juicer was the villain because he was so bossy. And then the chopper showed up. His sharp blades and grating 'Cut it out or I'll cut you out' OMG nightmares!"

Jaren_2005: Subject: Re: Candle Cove local kidā€™s show?

That wasnā€™t the villain, the puppet with the mustache. That was the villainā€™s sidekick, Horace Horrible. He had a monocle too, but it was on top of the mustache. I used to think that meant he had only one eye.

But yeah, the villain was another marionette. The Skin-Taker. I canā€™t believe what they let us watch back then.

Ocean Elf: Idiot4 says, "Nah, Chopper was only the sidekick to the 5-eyed blender! OMG the things they let us watch back then."

kevin_hart: Subject: Re: Candle Cove local kidā€™s show?

jesus h. christ,

Ocean Elf: *Scowl* blaspheming!

kevin_hart: the skin taker. what kind of a kids show were we watching? i seriously could not look at the screen when the skin taker showed up. he just descended out of nowhere on his strings, just a dirty skeleton wearing that brown top hat and cape. and his glass eyes that were too big for his skull. christ almighty.

Ocean Elf: *Glare* Put a boot in it!

Idiot3 blasphemes and adds, "Those horrible pulsing eyes! Blender saw everything from every direction, and he controlled his speed with his eyes! I don't know where he came from, he was just suddenly there and it scared the tar right out of me!"

Skyshale033: Subject: Re: Candle Cove local kidā€™s show?

Wasnā€™t his top hat and cloak all sewn up crazily? Was that supposed to be childrenā€™s skin??

Ocean Elf: Idiot1 says, "And those wild colours on him. Wasn't that supposed to be spillage from fruits and vega he and chopper chopped up? And when Eraser threatened to sick him on Pencil, ugh, that was just too much."

mike_painter65: Subject: Re: Candle Cove local kidā€™s show?

yeah i think so. rememer his mouth didnā€™t open and close, his jaw just slid back and foth. i remember the little girl said ā€œwhy does your mouth move like thatā€ and the skin-taker didnā€™t look at the girl but at the camera and said ā€œTO GRIND YOUR SKINā€

Ocean Elf: Idiot2 says, "I remember the sharpener asking him why his top came off and he said 'So I can grind up everything and everyone' and that laugh of his, oh my ugh!"

Skyshale033: Subject: Re: Candle Cove local kidā€™s show?

Iā€™m so relieved that other people remember this terrible show!

I used to have this awful memory, a bad dream I had where the opening jingle ended, the show faded in from black, and all the characters were there, but the camera was just cutting to each of their faces, and they were just screaming, and the puppets and marionettes were flailing spastically, and just all screaming, screaming. The girl was just moaning and crying like she had been through hours of this. I woke up many times from that nightmare. I used to wet the bed when I had it.

Ocean Elf: Idiot1 says, "Oh I'm so relieved other people remember that awful show! I kept having nightmares about it where the theme repeats and during it the juicer, blender, chopper and all are all coming right apart and parts of them are just flying around screaming, and the camera just cuts to each piece of them one at a time for about half a second each. And the pencil is just standing there moaning and crying like she's been through hours and hours of this. It scared me so much I wet the bed!"

kevin_hart: Subject: Re: Candle Cove local kidā€™s show?

i donā€™t think that was a dream. i remember that. i remember that was an episode.

Ocean Elf: Idiot3 ups the ante with "OMG That wasn't a dream, that was actually an episode! I remember seeing it!"

Skyshale033: Subject: Re: Candle Cove local kidā€™s show?

No no no, not possible. There was no plot or anything, I mean literally just standing in place crying and screaming for the whole show.

Ocean Elf: so one idiot tells about a crazy dream, the other idiot says it wasn't a dream, the first idiot gets, or at least pretends to get all panicky and goes "Oh, no, it had no plot! It couldn't be a show!" How much you want to bet the next idiot will insist it is an episode? Again.

kevin_hart: Subject: Re: Candle Cove local kidā€™s show?

maybe iā€™m manufacturing the memory because you said that, but i swear to god i remember seeing what you described. they just screamed.

Ocean Elf: So now the idiot contingent is going to play at how they had this uber collective mind linkage over a nonexistent kiddy show that wasn't a kiddyshow...

Jaren_2005: Subject: Re: Candle Cove local kidā€™s show?

Oh God.

Ocean Elf: *Scowl* Stop doing that! From now on I'm changing all your blaspheming to 'hamgod'.

Jaren_2005: Yes. The little girl, Janice, I remember seeing her shake. And the Skin-Taker screaming through his gnashing teeth, his jaw careening so wildly I thought it would come off its wire hinges. I turned it off and it was the last time I watched. I ran to tell my brother and we didnā€™t have the courage to turn it back on.

Ocean Elf: Idiot4 blasphemes and says "Yes! I remember thinking that blender was gonna pulverize both pencil and eraser into little pieces when they flew around and into him and he shut himself up. Pencil and eraser were screaming so hard and Blender was screeching about killing them and he just turned himself on with one of his five eyes and that's when I turned it off and never watched again. I just never got the courage!"

mike_painter65: Subject: Re: Candle Cove local kidā€™s show?

i visited my mom today at the nursing home. i asked her about when i was littel in the early 70s, when i was 8 or 9 and if she remebered a kidā€™s show, candle cove. she said she was suprised i could remember that and i asked why, and she said ā€œbecause i used to think it was so strange that you said ā€˜iā€™m gona go watch candle cove now momā€™ and then you would tune the tv to static and juts watch dead air for 30 minutes. you had a big imagination with your little pirate show.ā€

Ocean Elf: Yeah right. We got static channels too when I was a kid, and not once did I come across any weird shows there.

This whole thing was either a few people getting together on a project to write a crazy sort of round robin version of a really tired old pasta plot. Or it was all the efforts of one person. It's easy enough to make up fake emails.

Over and out.
