The Rake: Bedroom Terror

--

CP(Creepypasta): During the summer of 2003, events in the northeastern United States involving a strange, human-like creature sparked brief local media interest before an apparent blackout was enacted.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: 1. There was no such blackout, nor did the world end in 2003. Obviously.

2. The Rake was created in 2005 by 4chan.

😨CP: Little or no information was left intact, as most online and written accounts of the creature were mysteriously destroyed.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: *Yawn* But you're the special snowflake who has somehow retained all the *cough* 'information' as usual...Right.

😨CP: Primarily focused in rural New York state and once found in Idaho, self proclaimed witnesses told stories of their encounters with a creature of unknown origin. Emotions ranged from extremely traumatic levels of fright and discomfort, to an almost childlike sense of playfulness and curiosity.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: The fright end of the scale, that would be internet trolls faking to try convincing and creeping other people out. The curiosity/playfulness would be trolls going "LULZ! Let's see how many people we can creep out with this story!"

The Idaho story is called Rabbits In The Creek.

😨CP: While their published versions are no longer on record, the memories remained powerful.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: *Yawn* So if the published records don't exist any more, how would you know there were any? Memories? Right. Try fantasies.

😨CP: Several of the involved parties began looking for answers that year.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: A full two years before the rake was dreamed up. Yeah right.

😨CP: In early 2006, the collaboration had accumulated nearly two dozen documents dating between the 12th century and present day, spanning 4 continents.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Because chain letters and campfire stories, (no, not documents in this case,) have a way of spreading like that on the internet especially via 4chan and related troll pits. You can be sure all this 1200s stuff is utterly bogus.

😨CP: In almost all cases, the stories were identical.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Chain letters tend to be like that.

😨CP: I’ve been in contact with a member of this group and was able to get some excerpts from their upcoming book.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: You can't get excerpts from books that aren't published yet. In this case, there isn't even a book coming.

😨CP: A Suicide Note: 1964

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Wait, I thought you said it was an up and coming book excerpt.

😨CP: "As I prepare to take my life, I feel it necessary to assuage any guilt or pain I have introduced through this act. It is not the fault of anyone other than him.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Uh, what to say? You weakling. Killing yourself instead of the rake? *SMH*

😨CP: For once I awoke and felt his presence. And once I awoke and saw his form. Once again I awoke and heard his voice, and looked into his eyes.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Aaaaagh! That sentence burns! You were no doubt going for dramatic effect, but you only got annoyingly repetitive. This could've been shortened to something like "When I awoke, I felt his presence, saw his form, heard his voice, looked into his eyes." and still, none of it is true.

😨CP: I cannot sleep without fear of what I might next awake to experience. I cannot ever wake. Goodbye."

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Huh? So you're afraid to awaken because of what you, or the rake, might do? Answer, you could throttle the rake.

😨CP: Found in the same wooden box were two empty envelopes addressed to William and Rose, and one loose personal letter with no envelope:

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Wow, generic. Do you have any idea how many people there are in the world named William and Rose? This is a big convince-tactic fail. You're just not moving me to anything near belief let alone fright.

😨CP: "Dearest Linnie,

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Of course, I've seen the names 'Lynn' 'Linda' 'Lindsay' and 'Linnea'. But 'Linnie' Now you're trying to be unique. *SMH*

😨CP: I have prayed for you. He spoke your name."

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: so... *Sneer* The Rake goes around saying "Linnie... Linnie..." What a moron.

😨CP: A Journal Entry (translated from Spanish): 1880

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Right, gotta toss in some random backdate to make it sound historical, and throw in the language thing to make it sound like you know Spanish. Yeah, I'm not impressed or convinced. and whatever happened to William and Rose?

😨CP: "I have experience the greatest terror. I have experienced the greatest terror. I have experienced the greatest terror.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Your tale is irritating. Your tale is irritating. Your tale is irritating.

😨CP: I see his eyes when I close mine. They are hollow. Black.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Mary sue and Gary Stu writers really have a thing for hollow mad black eyes.

😨CP: They saw me and pierced me. His wet hand. I will not sleep. His voice (unintelligible text)."

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: So this slob has black eyes that see you and you somehow know this when you have your eyes shut? It pierces you, with what? and a wet hand? Eww. Wet from what?

😨CP: A Mariner's Log: 1691

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: More bogus boring non-history. But I'll add that mariners are a pretty brave lot. The Rake could hardly scare them nor survive for long in an ocean storm.

😨CP: "He came to me in my sleep. From the foot of my bed I felt a sensation.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: I've felt sensations in bed too, when a family member wanted to wake me. Though they usually happen at the head end. Foot end, that was family pets jumping on or off. So, still, not scared. The rake, though, he would be more than scared if he tried lurking around my bed.

😨CP: He took everything.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: So, you went from just a sensation to the rake taking everything - this isn't adding up. Especially since this is supposed to be at sea. How's this rake just going to get aboard a ship, know which bunk to single out, and take everything from one of the sailors without getting mobbed, flogged, then tossed overboard?

😨CP: We must return to England.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Hahaha! All over the map, and still as real as fairy dust.

😨CP: We shall not return here again at the request of the Rake."

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Wait, what? You had a sensation, he took everything, you said nothing about him saying anything during this whole ridiculous faux encounter until now. So, the rake probably said something like: "Linnie. I am the rake. I request you leave." Yeah, no.

😨CP: From a Witness: 2006

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: A fictional witness in an internet story...

😨CP: "Three years ago,

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Nope. If this bit was written in 2006, it the furthest back it could go is 2005 since that's when The Rake character was invented. But 2006 is much further back than three years ago now.

😨CP: I had just returned from a trip from Niagara Falls with my family for the 4th of July. We were all very exhausted after a long day of driving, so my husband and I put the kids right to bed and called it a night.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: You're putting me to sleep.

😨CP: At about 4am, I woke up thinking my husband had gotten up to use the restroom.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: I'm still unmoved.

😨CP: I used the moment to steal back the sheets, only to wake him in the process.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Um - TMI.

😨CP: I apologized and told him I though he got out of bed. When he turned to face me, he gasped and pulled his feet up from the end of the bed so quickly his knee almost knocked me out of the bed. He then grabbed me and said nothing.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Wait, why did you think he had gotten up to use the bathroom? If he's still there, then you would've known it.

😨CP: After adjusting to the dark for a half second, I was able to see what caused the strange reaction. At the foot of the bed, sitting and facing away from us, there was what appeared to be a naked man, or a large hairless dog of some sort.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Eww, so this rake thing doesn't even have the decency to leave a couple to themselves in their own private bedroom? *Scowl* He's really looking to get clobbered!

😨CP: Its body position was disturbing and unnatural, as if it had been hit by a car or something. For some reason, I was not instantly frightened by it, but more concerned as to its condition.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: You're an idiot.

😨CP: At this point I was somewhat under the assumption that we were supposed to help him.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: You're really an idiot.

😨CP: My husband was peering over his arm and knee, tucked into the fetal position, occasionally glancing at me before returning to the creature.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: *Yawn*

😨CP: In a flurry of motion, the creature scrambled around the side of the bed, and then

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: That's when you finally realized this was no innocent little puppy dog, I hope.

😨CP: crawled quickly in a flailing sort of motion right along the bed until it was less than a foot from my husband's face. The creature was completely silent for about 30 seconds (or probably closer to 5, it just seemed like a while)

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Thirty Vs. five seconds? Quite a difference there.

😨CP: just looking at my husband. The creature then placed its hand on his knee and ran into the hallway, leading to the kids' rooms.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: So the rake chickened out on you two and decided to go for an easier prey, right? *Scowl* He's so ended when I get to him.

😨CP: I screamed and ran for the lightswitch, planning to stop him before he hurt my children.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: You should've done that in the first place.

😨CP: When I got to the hallway, the light from the bedroom was enough to see it crouching and hunched over about 20 feet away.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Twenty feet? Gosh, you people must live in a huge house!

😨CP: He turned around and looked directly at me, covered in blood.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: So how did he get covered in blood in such short order?

😨CP: I flipped the switch on the wall and saw my daughter Clara.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Well, she should be in her own room, so nothing unusual there. But the rake's suddenly bleeding profusely, well, who knows.

😨CP: The creature ran down the stairs while my husband and I rushed to help our daughter. She was very badly injured and spoke only once more in her short life. She said "he is the Rake".

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: *Scowl* So, somehow this rake identifies himself and manages to kill this little girl in a matter of seconds, with what, exactly? Oh, right, his hollow piercing black eyes. *Rolling eyes*

😨CP: My husband drove his car into a lake that night, while rushing our daughter to the hospital. They did not survive.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: How can he, however distraught, mistake a lake for a hospital? And usually you don't drive someone critically injured to the hospital yourself, you call emergency.

😨CP: Being a small town, news got around pretty quickly. The police were helpful at first, and the local newspaper took a lot of interest as well. However, the story was never published and the local television news never followed up either.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Because it was all imaginary...

😨CP: For several months, my son Justin and I stayed in a hotel near my parent's house. After we decided to return home,

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: *Sigh* The only thing I can think of right now is all the money you must've spent on hotel over those few months. And why not introduce all your family by name, if this is still supposed to be the same one, that is? I'm confused.

😨CP: I began looking for answers myself. I eventually located a man in the next town over who had a similar story. We got in contact and began talking about our experiences. He knew of two other people in New York who had seen the creature we now referred to as the Rake.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Bull...Crap...

😨CP: It took the four of us about two solid years of hunting on the internet and writing letters to come up with a small collection of what we believe to be accounts of the Rake. None of them gave any details, history or follow up.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Translation: 'We got on the net and together with other netizens, came up with this tall tale which is supposed to scare the pants off anyone who reads it.'

😨CP: One journal had an entry involving the creature in its first 3 pages, and never mentioned it again. A ship's log explained nothing of the encounter, saying only that they were told to leave by the Rake. That was the last entry in the log.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: We've already been through that. It's bollox. It also makes no sense, because the rake would be no match for a group of tough sailors. They could make a nice meal of him.

😨CP: There were, however, many instances where the creature's visit was one of a series of visits with the same person.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: So, he's not just some random lurker, but a stalker as well. *Scowl* And this very special person is, let me guess. Linnie...?

😨CP: Multiple people also mentioned being spoken to, my daughter included. This led us to wonder if the Rake had visited any of us before our last encounter.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: *Pfft* Well, he is a lurker, stalker, and coward, so depending on which emotion was ruling him at any given time, and who writes the next instalment of his story...

😨CP: I set up a digital recorder near my bed and left it running all night, every night, for two weeks.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: and let me guess, nothing happens...

😨CP: I would tediously scan through the sounds of me rolling around in my bed each day when I woke up. By the end of the second week, I was quite used to the occasional sound of sleep while blurring through the recording at 8 times the normal speed. (This still took almost an hour every day)

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: Yeah, I could've told you, nothing there.

😨CP: On the first day of the third week, I thought I heard something different. What I found was a shrill voice. It was the Rake.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: So, he has a shrill voice, interesting.

😨CP: I can't listen to it long enough to even begin to transcribe it. I haven't let anyone listen to it yet.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: So then you don't know it isn't just your device going on the blink.

😨CP: All I know is that I've heard it before, and I now believe that it spoke when it was sitting in front of my husband. I don't remember hearing anything at the time, but for some reason, the voice on the recorder immediately brings me back to that moment.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: I think you've got some mental issues.

😨CP: The thoughts that must have gone through my daughter's head make me very upset.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: No crap. Anyone would be upset at their kid's demise.

😨CP: The thoughts that must have gone through my daughter's head make me very upset.

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: You already said that...

😨CP: I know and fear that one night I'll wake up to see him staring at me."

🧝‍♀️Ocean Elf: You already went through that. If it happens again, don't waste time staring back. Bash his brain out.

So, Rakey boy, dog, whatever you are... Watch your step. You are in deep.
