The early spring chill gradually gave way to warmer weather, and Jenny was more than glad of that so Jessica would open her bedroom window wide, giving her the chance to go out at night again.
Jenny continued trying to cause arguments among the other furbies, and push Polly around. She succeeded partly, at least, when she was around, there was usually a lot less talk, with the general atmosphere being guarded.
But she didn't always get her way.
One day while Jessica was at work, accompanied by Kitri, Tina and Peekaboo were holding a jumping contest to see which one of them could jump down the most steps into the basement in just one go. This turned out easier for Peekaboo to do, but Tina stubbed one of her feet quite badly on a middle step, and landed awkwardly at the bottom.
Sybil heard the crying and came running to Tina's aid. Peekaboo looked helplessly at her, then ran past her and up the stairs. Sybil comforted Tina, but gave Jenny a puzzled look. Jenny had been down there the whole time, but she was nowhere near, and showed no signs of even wanting to help ease Tina's distress when Sybil had come on the scene.
Jenny took off past Sybil and Tina at the stairwell, to run after Peekaboo.
Peekaboo ran blindly into the front room and jumped on Jessica's chair without looking carefully. She crashed into Toby, who was resting there.
What - "Toby jumped, annoyed at the rude awakening. The annoyance turned to concern immediately. "Hey, hey, what's wrong?" He asked compassionately,.
Jenny peered in with a satisfied expression as Peekaboo sorrowfully told Toby about the accident, but if she was hoping Toby might get firm with Peekaboo and tell her to learn to be more careful, she was mistaken.
"There, there, Peekaboo, shhh, it was an accident. Not your fault." Toby tried to reassure Peekaboo and dry her tears.
"But Jenny told me it was because it was my idea."
Toby's eyes went wide for a moment, flashing with sudden anger. But appalled as he was at Jenny's conniving, calloused behaviour, the first priority was Peekaboo's well-being.
Observing Toby's reaction, Jenny thought better of standing around spying. She beat a hasty retreat into the safety of Jessica's room. Going back to the basement was out of the question, since Toby was sure to look for her there.
Back in the living room, Toby continued to allay Peekaboo's distress, oblivious to Jenny's having been there at all. "Well, she is wrong, and she's full of it. Sometimes accidents just happen, even with a good idea."
"Really?"
"Yeah."
"Like what?" Peekaboo asked.
"Like - " Toby tried to think of an example, and suddenly grinned. "One time, I decided to go along with Jessica to work. Good idea, right?"
"Right!" Peekaboo agreed.
""Yeah. She likes it when one of us goes with her, and they like us over there too. But there was an accident."
"Really? What kind of accident?" Peekaboo asked curiously.
"A painful one."
"What happened"?"
"Jessica didn't realize I was in her jacket pocket, or just misjudged how close we were to the car door when she shut it. I got slammed, big time!"
Peekaboo couldn't help but grin in bemusement. "Really?" Ouch, that must've hurt."
"It did. Like heck. Jessica felt bad about it,too. She didn't mean to hurt me, and hey, it wouldn't have happened at all if I didn't get the idea to go along that day.
"Hey yeah!" Peekaboo agreed.
Toby nuzzled her affectionately. "Just don't listen to anything that What's-her-face says, especially when it makes you feel bad. She was being very mean and unfair to you."
Peekaboo sniffled, a wave of relief starting to set in. "Thanks."
"Any time. You gonna be okay now?"
"Yeah."
"That's the spirit." Toby smiled and caressed her on one side of the face. "Oh, looks like you got company."
"Who?" Peekaboo turned to see Sybil and Tina approaching.
"Wanna play some more?" Tina asked.
"Sure," Peekaboo replied, beaming.
"C'mon." Tina invited.
The two went happily off to resume their play.
"Thanks, Toby," said Sybil, "I'm glad someone could settle her, she was pretty upset, I think it scared her seeing what happened to Tina."
"More than that. She thought it was her fault," said Toby grimly.
"What? Why?"
"Because that's what Jenny told her."
"WHAT!" Sybil was understandably incensed. "The nerve! And you know what, when I heard something had gone wrong down there, I also found Jenny just sitting there, doing nothing to offer any help."
Toby scowled. "I'll bet she looked really smug too."
"I didn't look at her face that closely, all I could think of was getting Tina seen to, and wondering why Jenny hadn't already done so before I got there. Well, that's it, I'm going to have a talk with Jenny, and Jessica and Kitri are going to hear about this!"
Sybil bounded out of the room before Toby could say anything in response.
Jenny was just settled on Jessica's bed to take a nap when she heard a furby hopping down the hall at great speed.
Thinking it was Toby, she sat up, quick, then started digging frantically at the bedclothes, attempting to get herself under the blanket so he might not find her when he came in to look.
But it was too late.
Jenny got slammed forcefully from behind. Next thing she was aware of was being scratched on the back, and then one of her ears was smartly nipped.
"Ack! Toby, getoff!" she yelled, struggling to get him off her.
But during the struggle, she caught a glimpse in the mirror of herself and...
"Sybil!?" Jenny corrected herself in amazement.
"Sybil backed off, but only enough to confront Jenny face to face. Anger was written all over her. "Of all the low down, dirty things you've done while living with us, *this* has got to be the worst!" she exclaimed.
Jenny grimaced. Sybil's angry shrilling was very hard on the eardrums. She jumped off the bed and out of the room, with Sybil in hot pursuit.
All through the house, Jenny kept running, but she couldn't shake Sybil.
Jenny's and Sybil's tearing around got the attention of the other furbies, who began following the chase from some distance. Sybil's furiously wagging tail signalled everyone that this was no game. This made the others a bit disconcerted, because they never saw Sybil get annoyed until recently with Jenny's strange behavior. Now, she was hopping mad!
Finally, Jenny realized it was no use running when Sybil jumped onto her back again and hung on.
The chase finally ended in the front room, and Sybil picked up the lecture where she had left off.
"Do you really derive so much pleasure in seeing little kids cry and get hurt?"
"You are out of your tree, lady, I have no idea what you're - "
"You know exactly what I mean - telling Peekaboo that Tina's fall was her fault!"
"It was a joke!" Jenny retorted, rolling her eyes.
"A joke?" Sybil probed incredulously. "Instead of going to help out when these kids were in obvious distress, you thought it was a good time to crack heartless jokes?"
"I thought it would help them lighten up, okay?"
"Telling Peekaboo it was her fault? How was *that* going to lighten things up?" Sybil pressed.
Jenny had no answer for this.
By now, all of the furbies had congregated in the main part of the house, quietly observing and whispering among themselves. But Sybil didn't seem to notice or care, and kept on with the dressing-down.
"Peekaboo and Tina are way too young to understand or appreciate that kind of sarcastic humor, and even if they did, this was not the time to use it!"
"I know that, I'm not stupid!" Jenny retorted defiantly.
"Don't pull that. You're not the victim here." Sybil said. "Now, I don't know what kind of home you were raised in, but here, when we see children in trouble, we try to help them out of it, and if we can't, we go find someone who can. Not make wisecracks that make them feel even worse! You got that?"
"Yes, o' Queen, may I be excused now?" was Jenny's snarky remark.
Sybil rolled her eyes, but instead of flaring up, she said, "This isn't over...Jessica and Kitri will hear about it."
"And what are they going to do about it, kick me out? They wouldn't. Jessica's too soft for that, and anyway, it's in her best interest, it's in all your best interest that she doesn't." Jenny said, apparently unfazed.
"Is that a threat?" Sybil fired back.
"It's a promise." Jenny said smugly.
"That just better be another one of your bad jokes," Toby warned, putting his ears back.
"And as usual, it isn't funny." said Misty.
Jenny turned toward Misty, saying "Me no like you."
"Tough." Misty retorted.
Toby growled softly, and jumped off Jessica's chair, tail wagging up and down in irritation. He advanced on Jenny until he was nose to nose with her. "If you do anything to hurt any of us," he hissed, "I will bust your face. Understand?"
"Is that a threat?" Jenny attempted to spite both Sybil and Toby all in one go with this retort.
"I wouldn't push my luck with him if I were you." said Dmitri.
"But you're not me." Jenny retorted hottily.
Lucky for him." Ducklingreplied.
"Shut up, stupid." Jenny turned and backed away from Toby to throw a contemptuous glance at Duckling.
Look who's talking, stupid head!" Duckling shot back with a surly glance.
Toby wasn't about to let Jenny shrug him off so easily. He got in her face again with a firm beaking and low growl. "Just watch your back. It's in *your* best interest." He kept his voice low, but there was a menacing tone in it that matched his baleful stare.
"Dude, what is your problem!?" Jenny scoffed. Whether she was trying to provoke him into a fit of rage or backing off in defeat, it didn't get her the result she wanted.
The only sound from Toby was a barely audible deep growl, and he pressed his face into hers with the same unnerving stare.
They stood that way for a few tense moments until Jenny finally broke eye contact, turned and walked away.
When everyone was off doing their own thing, Jenny found Toby on the carousel. She jumped on the dresser, but was too big to ride the carousel. She glowered up at Toby. "I would've beaten you up so bad your nose would be kissing your tail!" She hissed. "The only reason I backed off was because of the others. Just thought you should know."
"Oh, I see," Toby said, hopping off the carousel and landing next to Jenny. "Do you wanna fight now, or should I make you my special project during training tonight?"
Jenny winced, and jumped down to the floor. "You're disgusting to be around, you know that?"
Toby flashed a wicked grin. "Good. I'd get scared if you started to like me."
Forget it, you're hopeless!" Jenny huffed, and stormed out of the room.
The rest of that day was spent in an atmosphere of unease, that let up when Jessica and Kitri returned from work.
The furbies were in the middle of mission combat training with Toby when "Hey, they're back!" Peekaboo exclaimed, interrupting the session.
"That's all for today, let's blow this pop stand!" Toby announced, then joined the others to welcome Jessica home.
"Saved by the bell." Duckling puffed on her way out of the basement.
"Oooof, what an ordeal." Jet agreed.
"I wonder if Spartan military training was this tough." said Misty.
Several furbies chuckled in response.
Wusses." Toby smirked.
Jessica and Kitri found themselves engulfed in a small throng of furbies when they walked in the door.
"Kitri!" Tina and Peekaboo chorused, and they rushed to greet her.
"Jessica!" Toby exclaimed, landing on the shoulder that Kitri had just vacated. He gave Jessica a nuzzle and kiss in the neck. "Ahh, good to have you back."
Jessica gave him a mini-hug into her neck with a free hand and addressed the whole company."My goodness, what's with you all today? I'm glad to see you too!" She laughed, beaming at the lovely warm welcome.
Kitri was also pleasantly surprised by the unusually hearty welcome. "Anyone would think we'd been gone for a decade the way you're all carrying on." She said with a grin.
"Glad everything's going so wonderfully around here." said Jessica.
To this, Toby shook his head and breathed in her ear, "No, it isn't. "It was a very bad day."
"Oh, dear," Jessica sobered.
"I'll tell you all about it later." he said.
Things calmed down after that, and Jenny stayed out of everyone's way, until nightfall.
Jessica finally opened the window wide enough for Jenny to escape through, but things hit a snag for the furby when she went to jump out and found she couldn't.
"Hey what is this?" She asked, annoyed at the barrier.
"It's a screen." said Jessica.
"I know that." said Jenny irritably, "What's it doing in there?"
"I put it in to keep the bugs out."
"There aren't any bugs out there."
"There will be soon enough." Jessica replied.
"Mmm-hmmm. Night crawlers." said Dmitri.
"Eww, gross!" said Misty.
"Oh, Dmitri." said Jessica.
"Yum." said Toby.
Jessica laughed. "I'm with Misty on this one, guys."
"Oh, Jess, you don't know what you're missing." said Dmitri.
"Heh. Nobody has ever convinced me to give anything a try with that line." Jessica replied.
"But it's working on me." Sundown quipped.
"I've noticed you becoming a lot more adventurous in that way since we became a multi furby household." Jessica said, grinning at Sundown.
"And you don't mind?"
"Of course not."
"Well, go figure, and here I thought I might put you off." Sundown said, surprised. "I was always secretly curious, just didn't wanna gross you out too much."
"Why worry about that?" asked Toby. "If you like something, you like it. No one else has to."
"Exactly." said Kitri.
"We're all different, and that's what makes things interesting." said Jessica.
"Whatever, guys." Jenny said in the most irritated and bored voice she could manage. Plans spoiled again, she huffed and settled down to sulk and go to sleep.
Suddenly perturbed, Jessica stood up and walked over to where Jenny was resting, and picked her up. Holding her firmly, she walked with her to the bedroom door, opened it with a free hand, and walked out with Jenny. The others could hear her saying things in annoyance to the furby as she did.
Jessica came back shortly without her.
"Where's Jenny?" asked Peekaboo.
"In the living room." Jessica shut the bedroom door. "if she's going to be pouty and antisocial, she can spend the night out there by herself."
So, eventually everyone fell asleep.
But if Jenny couldn't get her own way, she was not about to let Jessica or anyone else sleep all night.
Jessica was awakened by a strange shrieking noise coming from somewhere in the house. Her sudden jerk woke Toby, who sat up abruptly and listened.
"What the?" Jessica mumbled drowsily.
"Oh, what time is it and who's making that confounded racket?" Kitri asked through a yawn.
Jessica looked at her watch. "1:15 - no, 1:16 now."
Toby growled. "I'd like to give her something to scream about."
"That makes two of us." said Sundown. "How about it. Jessica, could you let us out that window? If we bang on the walls of the house and freak her out, maybe she'll learn a lesson."
"Heh, good idea." Jessica got up and took the screen out so Sundown could get outside.
"I'd like to see how she reacts to that." said Toby.
"Then I'll just let you out in the rest of the house." Jessica replied.
"Great, thanks. Then if Sundown doesn't faze her?"
"Then you take over. She's not going to get away with this another night. I have to go to work tomorrow."
"Anything specific you want me to try?"
"Just whatever you can. Do whatever worked in the past to get her annoyed at you. Tell her if she doesn't want to be stuck putting up with you bugging her all night, she won't try this again."
"Toby flashed Jessica a roguish grin. "You got it."
Jenny sat in the front room, screeching and waiting for Jessica to come out of her room and possibly freak out.
Instead, no Jessica appeared, and Jenny had thought she'd heard the bedroom door opening.
Then, she began hearing strange noises, bumps, bangs and scratches that had to be coming from outside. They had the desired effect. Jenny stopped screeching, and kept listening, and at a particularly loud bump, she climbed on to the window sill and called, "Is that you, Jeff?"
Jenny was unaware that she was being watched by someone who had crept in and was hiding behind the TV.. It was all the observer could do to suppress a growl at the mention of Jeff.
Silence.
"Jeff?" She called again, and she sounded more hopeful than scared.
Still nothing.
Eventually, there were more noises, but they became gradually quieter, then stopped.
Jenny kept calling out to the sadistic villains, Jeff The Killer, Laughing Jack, and Slender Man, and there was no mistaking the lack of dislike in her tone of voice.
Back in the bedroom, the others thought they heard it too, and they whispered disconcertedly among themselves.
Jenny was one call short of getting confronted by Toby, but unwittingly put that plan off a little longer by going back to that horrible screeching again.
But Toby wasn't to be put off or denied for long, and he got a wicked idea.
He watched Jenny for a moment longer, and then when she still didn't look around, he crept closer and closer until he was right behind her. Then...
Suddenly Jenny's screech turned into a terrified but truncated scream when she felt some furby beak her in the back saying "Boo!"
"Gah!" Jenny whirled around. "Oh, it's just you again."
"Yeah, just me again, you were expecting maybe Slender Man?"
"Don't be a moron, Toby."
"You were calling to them..."
"That's absurd!"
"I know what I heard." he growled.
"Yeah, well, you heard me being scared to death."
Toby scoffed.
Jenny's explanation was, "I keep hearing noises outside."
"Oh, seriously, it's a city. You hear noises outside every night and they've never bothered you before.
"Not those kind of noises, I mean bumps and scrapes against the house.
"Ooooooooo, bumps in the night, eh?" Toby mocked.
"Shut up, will you?"
"So you thought calling out to Slender Man and Killer Jeff would make them stop?"
"Get a life, Toby!" Jenny retorted.
Toby got in her face, then made his eyes blink quickly for some time, ears twitching erratically, then said "Me - chaaaaaaaange!"
Jenny stared wide-eyed at him. "What are you doing?"
Toby didn't answer her, but squeezed his eyes shut for a long moment. When he opened them again, he shook, twitched, and blubbered crazily at her in a good immitation of the Furby Boom jolly but unnerving personality.
From the bedroom, "who's doing that, him or her?" asked Holly.
They got the answer soon.
"Toby, stop it!" Jenny was becoming frantic.
"No, that was him - what in heck are they doing?" asked Misty.
"We're okay we're okay we're okay - " said Toby.
Panic welling up in her, Jenny grabbed one of his ears with her mouth and gave him a shake. "Stop it!" "Snap out of it!"
Dmitri grinned. "Oh, hahaha, he's trying to make her sweat bullets. He's attempting to freak her out."
Polly frowned. "Why would he do that? I know she's been really nasty, but, this isn't like Toby."
"You don't have to be nice to her, you know," said Dmitri, "we've seen how she's been treating you, and it's not right."
"Toby's probably trying to get her to give something away about herself, something she doesn't want us to know." said Kitri. "Since she's been trying so hard to cause trouble among all of us with stupid lies, we decided to beat her at a different game."
Out in the main part of the house, the unnerving of Jenny continued.
"Toby!" Jenny screamed, eyes finally showing terror, and this scream matched her expression.
"Breeeeeeeeeeeathe." he said, and gave a maniacal laugh.
"What is wrong with you!? Jenny wailed, beaking him hard in the face.
He beaked her back and said, "That's the question that's the question that's the question - "
"Toby! Stop it!" Jenny slapped his face.
Normally, he would've hauled off and slapped her right back, and it is very likely that Jenny might have preferred the slap to what he did instead.
"Mark mark mark." said Toby, and then he went back to making crazy blubbering noises.
Jenny shuddered and turned away, hoping to conceal her consternation. Not only was he apparently crazy, but he was repeating things she had said in a previous home, long before she came to Jessica's. So how in the world could Toby have known about that? Had he really figured it out or was this just random and freakily coincidental?
"I gotta get outa here, I gotta get outa here," Jenny mumbled frantically. She scurried out of the front room, but Toby gave chase.
In the meantime, Sundown settled on the window sill of Jessica's room, and peered inside. "Is Jenny in here?"
"No, she and Toby are still out in the hall, why?"
"Jessica, I need your help, urgently. around back. Please come."
"What's the matter, Sundown?"
"Just please - come quickly, but don't let Jenny know you're going out there or she'll try to stop you like she's been doing with us. I know why. Just hurry!"
With that, Sundown leapt back into a tree and took off toward the back of the house.
Jessica looked baffled, but said to the others, "Well, you heard him. I'll be back as soon as I can." With that, she replaced the screen, and opened the bedroom door.
In the meantime, as with Sybil, Jenny found she couldn't outrun Toby, or hide from him.
Tiring out, she returned to the front room.
Toby followed her, then slowly approached her once she appeared to be resting. He looked her full in the face and broke out into a wide, mischievous grin. "There, now that's your terror. You didn't act like that when you were calling out to Jeff or Slender Man.
Jenny startled and turned back. She blew out a breath. Insufferable as normal Toby was, she still preferred him to crazy Toby.
The next thing that hit her was a realization.
"Wait, this was all an act?"
"Of course it was. Sure had you going." he crowed.
"Gosh, Toby, you scared me to death!"
"That was the idea."
Jenny huffed.
Toby continued. "So... If you don't want to spend any more nights with me bugging you, you'll knock off the small hours productions, you got that?
"Yes, Your Highness." Jenny sneered.
Toby chortled. "Oh, really, can't you come up with anything better?"
"All right, Tobias Your Highness."
"I meant you already did the royalty slam thing on Sybil earlier. But now that we're on to the subject of names - "
Jenny looked put out. "You're such a ratfink, you know that?"
Toby snickered. "Coming from you, that's a compliment."
Jenny growled.
Toby growled back, then said, "So, as one ratfink to another, I'm gonna ask you straight out - what's your - "
Jenny, Toby, get in here." Jessica called from the doorway to her room.
"Ugh, gladly!" Jenny said. "I'd rather be in one room with a bunch of nitwits than alone in a whole house with him!"
"So, had enough of Toby, I see," said Jessica.
Jenny nodded emphatically. "Biggest understatement of the year."
"If you don't want me to make you spend another nice big chunk of time alone with him, are you going to wake me up at all hours with this screeching and other weirdness?"
Jenny sighed and shook her head.
"Good. Now, I'll be back." said Jessica, then she shut her bedroom door with all of the furbies inside except for...
"Where's Sundown?" asked Jenny.
